Lead Project Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Lead Project Engineer to support the delivery of major high-voltage transmission projects. The role will take responsibility for coordinating engineering activities from the early development and optioneering stages through design development and into project delivery.

Working across multiple engineering disciplines, you will drive design maturity, coordinate technical deliverables, manage engineering risks and changes, and ensure that projects progress through the required technical and governance gateways.

This is a key role within the project team, requiring strong technical coordination, stakeholder management and project engineering experience within the transmission, substations or wider electrical infrastructure sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate engineering inputs and outputs throughout the project lifecycle, from optioneering and initial design through to detailed design and delivery.
  • Chair regular engineering coordination meetings, ensuring effective collaboration between engineering disciplines and timely resolution of technical issues.
  • Lead engineering risk meetings, identifying and managing engineering, design and quality risks while maximising opportunities for improvement.
  • Drive design maturity and ensure engineering scope is delivered to the required quality, technical and programme requirements.
  • Provide engineering input into project programmes and monitor progress against key engineering milestones.
  • Ensure designs and engineering deliverables comply with relevant technical specifications, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Support the resolution of technical non-compliances through the appropriate Deviation from Specification process where requirements cannot be met.
  • Manage engineering and design changes in accordance with the project change control process, including preparation and coordination of supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate engineering disciplines to ensure all required deliverables are completed at the appropriate project gates.
  • Coordinate the collection and development of engineering information required for Works Information (WI) packages.
  • Manage the engineering Technical Query (TQ) register throughout project delivery, ensuring queries are appropriately assigned, progressed and closed out.
  • Coordinate the review, acceptance and sign-off of contractor engineering deliverables.
  • Lead and coordinate engineering activities required at each project governance gate, ensuring all requirements are completed in accordance with the project governance framework.
  • Coordinate and lead activities including:
    • Site visits
    • Senior engineering reviews
    • Operational engagement
    • HAZID, HAZOP and HAZCON workshops
    • Design Authority Reviews
    • Technical Authority Reviews where required
  • Prepare and coordinate key engineering governance documentation, including:
    • Design Management Plans
    • Design Risk Management Indexes (DRMI)
    • Design Authority Reports
    • Gate documentation and supporting engineering evidence
  • Escalate significant engineering decisions, technical risks and unresolved issues to Senior Engineers and Engineering Managers.
  • Support Project Assurance Reviews (PAR) by preparing and submitting required engineering documentation and responding to review findings and feedback.
  • Maintain effective communication between engineering, project management, construction, operations, commercial and contractor teams.
  • Promote a proactive approach to engineering quality, technical assurance and design risk management throughout the project lifecycle.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
