We’re currently looking for an experienced professional to join our team as a Lead Risk Officer, HSBC UK. This remote role can be based in London, Sheffield, Manchester, or Birmingham.


Key Responsibilities

The Lead Risk Officer will support growth lending objectives for the Middle Market and Large Corporate businesses in the UK, while ensuring prudent credit risk management aligned with HSBC UK and Group policy. Key responsibilities include:

  • Promoting a strong, consistent credit culture across the Industrial/Manufacturing (incl. Chemicals), Transportation (incl. Automotive), and Metals & Mining (‘ITMM’) industry sectors.
  • Balancing robust risk discipline with customer needs while considering market conditions and their impact on credit decisioning.
  • Evaluating, recommending, and approving corporate transactions and annual reviews within delegated authority.
  • Ensuring credit proposals are structurally sound, commercially viable, and designed to minimise credit losses.
  • Partnering with the Senior Risk Officer to :
    • Assess portfolio credit quality, including Customer Risk Ratings (CRR) and approved limits.
    • Identify emerging risks requiring placement on the Watch, Worry, Monitor (WWM) list.
    • Maintain and evolve lending guidelines to enhance the risk profile across customer segments.
  • Providing expertise in industry and product knowledge to:
    • Lending, trade, cash management, and trading/hedging products teams. -regional credit teams across the board.
  • Delivering ad-hoc support, including:
    • Industry reporting (internal/external).
    • Guidance/training for colleagues (first- and second-line roles).
    • Audit and stress-testing exercises.

Requirements

To excel in this role, the successful candidate should have:

  • Demonstrated commercial credit judgement, with experience in:
    • Managing credit processes and assessing individual transactions.
    • Handling complex lending risks, especially within ITMM sectors.
  • A solid grounding in:
    • Legal, accounting, and regulatory considerations relevant to corporate lending.
    • Corporate banking operations (lending products, risk processes).
  • Proven ability to:
    • Challenge constructively and influence decision-making across stakeholders.
    • Translate complex credit issues into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Exposure to:
    • UK Industrial sectors (incl. Chemicals, Transportation – Automotive, Metals & Mining) and corporate approval environments is a strong advantage.
    • An understanding of sector dynamics and “industry landscaping.”
  • A financial services or banking background is essential.
  • Customer engagement and team management experience is welcomed (not compulsory).
