Role Description
The Lead Rotary Driller is a full-time, on-site role based in the United Kingdom, responsible for leading rotary drilling operations on geotechnical site investigation projects. Day-to-day tasks include planning and conducting borehole drilling, supervising drilling assistants, and ensuring samples are obtained to the required technical standards. The role involves operating and maintaining rotary drilling rigs and associated plant, implementing safe systems of work, and adhering to company and industry health and safety procedures. The Lead Rotary Driller will coordinate with site engineers, complete accurate drilling logs and records, and support the efficient delivery of site investigations. The position also includes responsibility for basic rig maintenance, managing materials and tooling on site, and representing SEP Geotech professionally with clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications

- Proven experience operating and leading rotary drilling rigs on geotechnical or related site investigation projects.
- Strong understanding of geotechnical drilling methods, sampling techniques, and borehole logging requirements.
- Solid knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations relevant to drilling and construction sites.
- Ability to supervise and mentor drilling assistants, coordinate with engineers, and work effectively as part of a site team.
- Competence in basic mechanical maintenance of drilling equipment and troubleshooting common rig issues.
- Good written and verbal communication skills for completing site records, reporting issues, and liaising with clients and colleagues.
- Valid UK driving license and willingness to travel and work outdoors in varying weather and ground conditions.
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CSCS card, NVQ or equivalent in drilling, safety training) are highly beneficial.
- Previous experience within rail or civil engineering environments and familiarity with UK standards (e.g., HS&E, CDM) is an advantage.
