About the role
Primary (75%)
Embedded within a project delivery team the Lead Rotating Machinery Design Coordinator/Engineer provides clear guidance and expert advice from an experience and knowledge base of Rotating Machinery, CABS, Mechanical & Process systems.
Provide understanding and guidance to the supply chain partners on what is expected to achieve stakeholder design acceptance in accordance with Gas Turbine & Compressor and Mechanical design codes, policy procedure and specification standards.
Define and coordinate the rotating machinery design deliverables schedule, including equipment data sheets, calculations, performance curves, rotor-dynamic studies, vibration assessments, general arrangements, interface drawings, inspection and test plans, preservation requirements, operating philosophies and asset data, while driving delivery against project milestones.
Ensure process safety, machinery safety, technical integrity, reliability, availability, maintainability, operability, environmental performance and whole-life value are embedded throughout equipment selection, package design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and handover.
Act as the primary rotating machinery design point of contact, maintaining an auditable technical assurance process and ensuring machinery records, vendor data, deviations, concessions, design decisions and asset information are complete and traceable.
Supplementary (25%)
Support wider business teams in preparing rotating machinery scopes, technical specifications, data sheets, tender schedules, technical bid evaluations, clarification responses and contract award recommendations.
Prepare clear progress, technical risk, assurance, interface, quality and decision updates for project governance and key stakeholders.
Participate in technical working groups to develop, review and standardise rotating machinery policies, specifications, maintenance strategies, obsolescence plans and engineering practices.

This role is critical to ensuring the safe, reliable and technically assured delivery of Rotating Machinery, CABS and mechanical systems projects, providing expert leadership that drives design quality, stakeholder acceptance and whole-life asset performance from concept through to commissioning and handover.
What you'll be doing
Design Management (General)
Ensure policy, procedure and specification compliance during the design process, including T/PM/G/35, T/PM/RE/18, NGUK/Con/BP135G, NGUK/Con/BP159G and NGUK/Con/BP134G.
Provide a single point of technical and design support for the Project Manager, via Subject Matter Experts.
Review and monitor the implementation of the Contractor’s Design Plan & Change Control procedure.
Ensure Formal Environmental Assessments compliance in accordance with T/PM/ENV/20.
Ensure the availability and acceptability of the Designer’s Design Deliverables Register.

Undertake design reviews and provide guidance to ensure designs meet the project scope requirements.
CDM / Process Safety Related
Ensure that a suitable Principal Designer strategy is developed for all stages of the project.
Ensure effective CDM risk registers are in place, being communicated and that key risks are escalated.
Ensure Formal Process Safety Assessment compliance in accordance with T/PM/HAZ/9.
Attend CDM Compliance Workshop to ensure clarity around Designer and Principal Designer duties.
Lead Pre-Operational / Asset Acceptance Process Safety Engineering Handover Reviews.
Review, comment and monitor the implementation of the Contractor’s Temporary Works design procedures.
Technical Standards
Define the project-specific rotating machinery codes, standards, specifications, data sheets and technical assurance requirements for inclusion in tender and contract documentation.
Assure compliance with applicable legislation, National Gas engineering requirements, OEM requirements and rotating machinery codes and standards.
Ensure applicable machinery standards, project specifications, deviations and acceptance criteria are communicated to designers, OEMs, package vendors and installation contractors.
Assess the technical, reliability, operability, cost and programme consequences of machinery design changes, deviations, concessions and scope changes.
Coordinate rotating machinery technical queries, deviations and concessions in accordance with NGUK/Con/BP159G, ensuring appropriate technical justification and approval.
T/PM/G/35
Undertake the responsibilities of the G35 Initiator and “User” single point of contact.
Ensure appointed G35 Appraisers and Approvers have the relevant Safety and Technical Competence (STC) and registered on the Approver / Appraiser database.
Ensure a G35 Register is managed and updated by the Designer.
Provide quality assurance for Part B or MA/1 (for Part C) prior to “User” acceptance submission.
Ensure design changes post Part C are managed and recorded in accordance with the project specific design change control procedure through to close out and completion.
Drawing and 3D Model Management
Coordinate access and issue of existing site drawings and models.
Review, comment and monitor the implementation of the Contractor’s Drawing Management Plan.
Ensure all drawings and schedules have been subject to formal document control process.
Ensure building information modelling, project and operational drawing compliance with T/PM/RE/20.
Provide Quality Assurance to the T/PM/RE/20 process.
What you'll bring
Technical or Specialist
Minimum 3 years’ experience in a relevant design management role.
Knowledge of:
Management of Change - T/PM/G35 Design Approval & Appraisal process along with T/PM/RE/18 Commissioning, Operational & Asset Acceptance Process.
Engineering, specification and technical assurance of gas generator, power turbine and compressor packages, including gas-turbine drivers, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, gearboxes, couplings, bearings, dry-gas seals, lubrication and seal-oil systems, fuel and starting systems, inlet and exhaust systems, package controls, anti-surge control, machinery protection, vibration monitoring and associated auxiliaries.
Application of gas-generator and compressor codes and standards, including API 616 for gas turbines, API 617 for axial and centrifugal compressors and expander-compressors, API 618 for reciprocating compressors, API 614 for lubrication, shaft-sealing and control-oil systems, API 670 for machinery protection systems and API 671 for special-purpose couplings, together with the BS ISO 3977 series for gas-turbine procurement and BS EN ISO 21789 for gas-turbine application safety.

Knowledge of gas-turbine and compressor package safety, protection and control requirements, including overspeed protection, vibration and axial-position monitoring, flame failure, fire and gas detection, fuel isolation, anti-surge protection, emergency shutdown, permissives, trips and safe-state design. Apply BS EN ISO 21789 for gas-turbine safety and BS EN 61511 where package protective functions form part of the site Safety Instrumented System.
Application of ISO 9001 quality-management principles to gas-generator and compressor package delivery, including OEM design assurance, supplier surveillance, material certification, inspection and test plans, manufacturing record books, non-conformance control, factory acceptance testing, mechanical running tests, performance testing, preservation, installation, commissioning and final asset handover.
Designing and developing advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).
Industry recognised codes and standards such as BS EN 61508 and BS EN 61513.
Functional safety management principles in process industry such as BS EN 61511.
Quality Management Systems within project delivery such as ISO9001.
CDM Regulations particularly relating to Principle Designer requirements.
Relevant engineering and industry experience with a strong appreciation of National Grid’s wider business operations and SHE Procedures.
Interpersonal, Supervisory or Management
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate, negotiate and influence at all levels of the business and with external contractors, regulatory bodies and peer organisations.
Commercial acumen to drive value through design optimisation, simplification, innovation and standardisation, whilst ensuring compliance with key legislation, technical standards and quality requirements.
