Lead Senior Engineer

The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Senior Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. This is a hybrid position and with shared office space in Perth, Edinburgh, and Glasgow, we welcome applications from Senior Engineers across Scotland.
Recent/ongoing projects include:
-
£1.2bn associated with the North East and South West Trunk Road Management Contracts. This includes management responsibility for over 5000 structures including delivery of the following:
- Assessment of the 831m long 9 no. span twin steel box girders with Lightweight Concrete composite deck of M90 Friarton Bridge and reinforced concrete piers, near Perth
- M90 Friarton Bridge deck edge parapet beam replacement and parapet upgrades
- Design and refurbishment of Strathmartine and Glamis Footbridges and approach ramps on the A90 in Dundee.
- The complex design and construction of temporary propping works for load mitigation measures at the 23 no. span M8 Woodside Viaducts in Glasgow
- Structural Investigation including Muon Tomography Trials, assessment, and long term management strategy of the Kingston Bridge Complex on the M8 in Glasgow
- Assessment of the 1,300-metre-long cable-stayed orthotropic steel box girder Erskine Bridge on the A898, Dumbartonshire
- Development of full resurfacing package for the 1300m Erskine Bridge
- Design and maintenance of a cable re-tensioning scheme at Erskine Bridge together with development and management of external painting contracts.
- Design and development of access systems to enable further cable and tower inspections at Erskine Bridge
- A90 Finavon Bridge, design of secant piled wall and scour protection to the riverbed and structure
- Assessment and bearing replacement design of the 120m long steel box girder of Fochabers Bridge on the A96
- Assessment of the 120m long 3-span continuous steel box girder of Earn Bridge on the M90

The long term management of Severn, Avonmouth, and Prince of Wales crossings with National Highways. Delivering projects such as those listed below:
- M48 Severn Suspension Bridge - £500M Main Cable Augmentation Feasibility Study
- M48 Severn Suspension Bridge - Main Cable Assessment, Management, and Mitigation works
- M48 Severn Suspension Bridge - Hanger Replacement Study
- Assessment and investigation of the 174m main span box girder at M5 Avonmouth Bridge
- M4 Prince of Wales Bridge - Assessment of the main Gantry and design of replacement

The Role
Our Lead Senior Engineers play an important part within the Design team and alongside our client, Transport Scotland. As a Lead Senior Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of road schemes while taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior designers.
Responsibilities include:
- To lead a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
- The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost, and programme.
- Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
- Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
- Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries, etc.
- Significantly contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
- Drive effective health and safety practices within the team
What You Will Bring to Us:
- Developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in a Senior Engineer role or equivalent
- Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
- Chartered status with the ICE or IStructE. or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
- Experienced in undertaking project related tasks associated with the management of health, safety, and welfare, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
- Capable of acting as day-to-day main engineering contact for a project where required under the terms of the commission, e.g. Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) for Network Rail schemes
- Knowledge, understanding, and experience of design and specification process with ability to advise others (Design Team Leader for appropriate projects). Can check designs to a high standard
- Highly experienced with relevant software and similar analytical tools. Good ability to check work produced by others
- Has a very good understanding of CDM and risk assessment. Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
- Capable of acting as Principal Designer for appropriate projects
- Supervisory and people manager skills. Capable of managing a medium sized, locally based single discipline technical team, including the people manager role
- Incorporated or Chartered status or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts
