Essential experience

• Significant commercial software-development experience, including experience in a senior, lead or technical-leadership role.
• Strong experience developing enterprise applications using Java or Kotlin.
• Strong knowledge of Spring Boot and modern backend-development practices.
• Experience designing, developing and operating systems built using a microservice architecture.
• Strong experience with Amazon Web Services, including deploying and supporting production applications.
• Experience working with Red Hat technologies or Red Hat-based enterprise environments.
• Practical experience integrating IBM watsonx into production systems.
• Experience integrating applications with external APIs and third-party systems.
• Experience with, or the ability to take ownership of, integrations Intercom, GetAccept and Calendly.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, ideally MySQL.
• Experience designing secure systems that process personal or sensitive information.
• A good understanding of automated testing, continuous integration and continuous delivery.
• Experience making architectural decisions and communicating their implications to technical and non-technical colleagues.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
• The judgement to distinguish between solutions that need to be engineered for scale and those that need to be delivered pragmatically and improved over time.

Desirable experience

• Experience with Angular, Bootstrap or other modern front-end frameworks.
• Knowledge of web-accessibility standards, particularly WCAG 2.1.
• Experience developing document-generation, workflow or rules-based decision systems.
• Experience integrating large language models or other AI capabilities into production systems.
• Experience in legal technology, financial services, later-life services or another regulated sector.
• Experience modernising or scaling an established proprietary application.

About you

You are an experienced technical leader who is equally comfortable discussing architecture, writing and reviewing code, and working with colleagues to solve complex product problems. You take ownership, communicate clearly and make pragmatic decisions that balance immediate delivery with long-term maintainability. You understand the importance of security, accuracy and reliability when technology is used to support significant legal and personal decisions. You are also interested in the commercial and social objectives of the organisation and want your technical work to contribute directly to its wider ambitions. You do not need a large team or a highly structured corporate environment to be effective. You are comfortable working with autonomy, creating clarity where it is needed and taking responsibility for delivering agreed outcomes. You will be joining the business at an important stage of its growth, with the opportunity to shape our technical direction and help build products that have a meaningful impact on individuals and their families.

A genuinely flexible way of working

We believe that talented people should be able to do meaningful, ambitious work without missing the moments that matter in their personal lives. This is a predominantly remote UK role, and there is no requirement to follow a conventional nine-to-five working day. The successful candidate will have substantial control over when they work and may arrange their hours around school runs, family commitments, appointments, caring responsibilities and other important parts of their life. The working pattern will be agreed with the successful candidate at the outset and can be reviewed as circumstances change. The role will require travel to the London area for team meetings approximately twice per month. We will aim to arrange these meetings in advance so that the successful candidate can plan around family, caring and other personal commitments. Reasonable travel expenses incurred in attending these meetings will be reimbursed by the Company. There will also be occasions when availability is needed for essential online meetings, releases, incidents or collaboration with colleagues and partners. Wherever possible, these commitments will be arranged in advance. Outside those agreed commitments, we focus on outcomes, trust, accountability and open communication rather than fixed hours or presenteeism. This flexibility is available to everyone. We are particularly keen to create an environment in which parents and carers can participate fully in family life without having to compromise their professional ambitions.

What we offer

• A salary of £90,000 per annum.
• 30 days’ paid annual leave, plus bank holidays.
