Location: Nationwide
Salary: £54,000 - £56,000

St John Ambulance works at the heart of communities, supporting and enabling them to access and receive physical and mental health first aid. We do this through developing and providing effective community response and outreach services (e.g. Ambulance response) and using our longstanding expertise to empower people with vital clinical skills and the confidence to use them (e.g. our Volunteers and Community Advocates, and Young Responders programmes).
Job Summary
As a DevOps Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering reliable, high-quality software and technology solutions across St John. Working closely with Product Managers, Product Owners and technical teams, you will contribute to the design, development and delivery of new solutions and improvements to existing systems.
You will champion DevOps practices across projects, helping to improve automation, CI/CD pipelines, release processes and engineering standards. You will also provide technical leadership, support continuous improvement and mentor colleagues, ensuring we deliver secure, maintainable and effective solutions that meet the needs of our organisation.

About You
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has strong experience working within a DevOps or software engineering environment.
- Has experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation and modern software delivery practices.
- Can provide technical guidance and confidently contribute to solution design and technical decision-making.
- Has a strong understanding of software development principles, including maintainable code, code reviews and testing.
- Is comfortable working collaboratively with Product Managers, Product Owners, developers and wider technical teams.
- Has strong problem-solving skills and can take ownership of complex technical issues through to resolution.
- Enjoys mentoring and supporting colleagues and promoting a culture of continuous learning.
- Is proactive, adaptable and committed to improving engineering practices and ways of working.
About the Role
In this role, you will:
- Work within a DevOps methodology, collaborating with Product Managers and Product Owners to deliver successful project outcomes.
- Contribute to technical estimation, planning and backlog prioritisation, providing technical insight and constructive challenge.
- Take ownership of delivering features to agreed quality, performance and technical standards.
- Provide technical design input and leadership for new solutions and changes to existing systems, including presenting proposals to the Technical Design Authority.
- Lead technical development across key projects, ensuring solutions align with agreed architectural and engineering standards.
- Champion high-quality software delivery through well-designed code, code reviews, testing and continuous improvement.
- Develop and improve CI/CD pipelines, release processes and automation to support reliable and efficient software delivery.
- Maintain appropriate technical documentation and support knowledge sharing across development and support teams.
- Mentor and support development team members, promoting engineering excellence and continuous learning.
- Lead the response to critical incidents, ensuring timely resolution, effective communication and robust root-cause analysis.
