Job Purpose
The Development team at Gresham is responsible for identifying, building and maintaining innovative technologies that solve our customers' Control, Connect, Data and EDM problems. As a Lead Software Engineer in our Control team, you are one of the team's technical leaders, helping to set technical direction, shape the design of our platform and raise the engineering bar, working closely with Product, Architecture and key stakeholders while maintaining a strong customer focus.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role with no line management responsibilities. You will spend a significant part of your time designing and building software, with a focus on backend services built with Kotlin and Spring Boot (alongside our established Java codebase), while also contributing across the stack to our React and TypeScript front end. You will play a leading part in the design and evolution of our cloud-native, multi-tenant platform, built with Docker and running on Kubernetes in AWS with PostgreSQL, supporting the ongoing modernisation of our software systems and engineering practices. You will also help shape how we build AI-powered features into our products, and how we use AI tools to transform the way we engineer software.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing technical leadership within a team of software engineers, helping to set technical direction and ensuring the team designs, develops and maintains high-quality software, working with Product to deliver against agreed priorities.
- Staying hands-on: designing and building backend services and APIs with Kotlin and Spring Boot, maintaining and evolving our existing Java code, and contributing to front-end features in React and TypeScript.
- Building challenging new AI-powered product features, taking ideas from experimentation through to secure, reliable, production-ready capabilities for our customers.
- Championing the use and adoption of AI tools across the software development lifecycle, helping the team use them effectively and responsibly to improve productivity and quality.
- Leading system and solution design for your area of the platform, producing clear designs and proposals, and driving technical decisions together with the team and architect.
- Working within a high performing, interdisciplinary team with a product manager and architect that consistently and iteratively delivers high-impact, high-quality work with due concern for compliance with adopted standards (PCI, ISO27001).
- Taking shared ownership of the performance, scalability, security and reliability of our services, containerised with Docker and running on Kubernetes in AWS, ensuring code is well-documented, tested and maintainable.
- Setting and championing engineering standards and best practices — code quality, automated testing, CI/CD and observability — and leading by example through code reviews, design reviews and architecture discussions.
- Championing security and privacy by design: embedding secure coding practices, threat modelling and data protection considerations into the team's everyday work, and ensuring customer data is handled in line with our security and privacy obligations.
- Mentoring and coaching engineers to grow their technical skills through pairing, knowledge sharing and constructive technical feedback.
- Breaking down complex problems into deliverable increments, helping to guide the team's technical planning and estimation, and identifying technical risks and dependencies early.
- Fully participating in the relevant Agile events; planning and estimation, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews and retrospectives.
- Leading the troubleshooting of complex issues, including in production, and driving root cause analysis and lasting fixes.
- Participating in the triage of issues reported by customers, working with the Customer Support team to assess impact, prioritise and drive them to resolution.
- Collaborating with other technical leads and architects across teams to align on technical approach, shared components and standards.
- You're a domain expert: a collective or company-wide subject matter expert in one or more areas of our platform, whether that's a set of complex services or problems or a particular technology.
- You drive technology forward for Gresham, typically lead on systems design in that area, and share proposals that level up others.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Significant commercial software engineering experience, including providing technical leadership to a development team as a senior or lead engineer.
- Strong backend engineering skills in Kotlin and Java with Spring Boot, including designing and developing APIs and microservice-based architectures — Kotlin is our preferred language for new backend development.
- Experience designing and building event-driven, asynchronous systems using message queues or streaming, with a good understanding of patterns such as idempotency, retries and eventual consistency.
- Experience designing concurrent, high-performance systems, with a solid understanding of multithreading, thread safety, and profiling and tuning for throughput and latency.
- Experience with React and TypeScript — full stack experience is highly desirable.
- Hands-on experience deploying and running cloud-native applications with Docker, Kubernetes and AWS in production.
- Strong PostgreSQL skills, including data modelling, query optimisation and schema migrations.
- Solid grasp of modern engineering practices: automated testing, CI/CD, code review, observability and secure coding.
- AI literate: confident using AI-assisted development tools day to day, with experience of, or a strong interest in, building product features on large language models (e.g. prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation, agents and evaluation).
- Excellent experience working with Agile and Lean techniques.
- Able to lead the technical delivery of features and projects from inception through to delivery and ongoing maintenance.
- Strong understanding of domain and business requirements, taking responsibility for critical parts of the application.
- Experience in financial services or fintech, such as reconciliation, payments or data integrity would be desirable.
