About The Role
Role Overview: As Lead Engineer, you will provide senior technical leadership on our Umbraco platforms, collaborating closely with engineers, QA analysts, and project managers to deliver high-quality solutions on time and within budget. This position requires deep Umbraco expertise, focusing on maintaining and evolving established platforms, particularly those supporting charities, non-profits, and membership organizations. You will be responsible for guiding architectural decisions, ensuring platform stability, and fostering technical excellence across projects. Your role involves leading technical planning, upholding standards through code reviews, and mentoring engineers to grow their Umbraco capabilities. This position does not include line management responsibilities; instead, it emphasizes technical leadership, delivery quality, and strategic platform health. Your contributions will directly influence long-term platform success, supporting donation journeys, supporter data, and critical services vital to client missions.
Qualifications
- Deep Umbraco expertise, including extensive hands-on experience building, extending, and maintaining platforms in production environments, especially with recent major versions.
- Strong proficiency in .NET and C#, demonstrating the ability to write clean, maintainable, object-oriented code and review peers' work effectively.
- Proven experience planning and executing major Umbraco upgrades, assessing package compatibility, and managing associated risks.
- Long-term ownership of platforms, with an understanding of technical debt management and platform evolution over years.
- Skilled in designing and implementing APIs and integrations within complex digital ecosystems, including CRM, payment, and marketing platforms.
- Expertise in database design and efficient querying in web applications, particularly with SQL Server.
- Practical experience with cloud hosting platforms, especially Azure and Umbraco Cloud, including environment management and CI/CD pipelines.
- Front-end development skills, emphasizing responsive, accessible interfaces aligned with WCAG standards.
- A strong commitment to security best practices, safeguarding supporter and donor data.
- Technical leadership in agile environments, with a focus on quality outcomes, mentorship, and collaborative team development.
- Client-facing confidence, capable of explaining technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders and managing technical client relationships effectively.

Responsibilities
- Provide senior technical leadership on the Umbraco platforms you oversee, setting and maintaining high standards for development, extension, and maintenance.
- Guide architectural decisions tailored to client budgets, team capabilities, and long-term maintenance needs, including planning and leading major version upgrades with thorough risk assessments.
- Maintain a comprehensive view of platform health, proactively identifying and addressing potential risks.
- Make informed decisions about hosting, environments, and deployment strategies, particularly within Umbraco Cloud or similar managed hosting services.
- Collaborate with other technical leads to contribute to shared standards and practices across the organization.
- Define the technical approach, specify technology stacks, and produce accurate estimates during the planning phase, clearly outlining scope, assumptions, and potential risks.
- Manage client expectations around agile delivery, ensuring transparency and alignment throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead the delivery of high-quality software during implementation, ensuring your team adheres to agreed timelines and standards, especially in critical areas such as donation journeys, payment integrations, and supporter data management.
- Uphold rigorous code review standards, fostering a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
- Manage relationships with clients as the senior technical point of contact, explaining complex technical concepts clearly and leading the response to any technical issues.
- Coordinate with engineering managers to ensure appropriate resource allocation and support for ongoing support needs.
- Mentor and develop engineers, particularly those enhancing their Umbraco skills, through pairing, reviews, and structured guidance.
- Stay abreast of current tools, standards, and trends, including the Umbraco roadmap and AI-assisted engineering practices, contributing ideas for team growth and departmental excellence.
