Engineering Team Lead (Mobile / Flutter)

Salary: £75,000
Location: Hereford, hybrid, 2 days per week in office minimum (ideally 3)

About the Role

A well-established ecommerce retailer is hiring a hands-on Engineering Team Lead with real mobile experience to lead their Flutter team and set the technical bar on how they build native-feeling mobile apps.

This is a hands-on, code-first lead role. The team’s historically been strong backend engineers who’ve picked up Flutter along the way, rather than mobile engineers by trade. Mobile experience is central to this hire: you’ll bring the mobile-first mindset the team hasn’t had at lead level, work closely with the Senior on the team (who does have strong mobile grounding) and lift the bar across architecture, patterns and craft. Wider business stack is C#, React, Node, TypeScript and AWS, but this role is firmly Flutter and Dart.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a product-aligned engineering team building and iterating on the mobile app in Flutter and Dart
  • Stay deeply hands-on in the codebase, writing production Flutter code and setting the standard for mobile architecture, patterns and craft
  • Partner closely with the Senior Engineer on the team to raise the overall mobile capability of the group
  • Coach and mentor senior, midweight and junior engineers, taking accountability for team-level decisions while empowering the team to collaborate and build consensus
  • Take ownership of the design, development, quality and documentation of software of medium-to-high complexity
  • Champion a customer-centric, test-and-learn approach to delivery across the team
  • Identify and implement opportunities to optimise development and deployment processes
  • Design and develop solutions with security controls engineered in from the outset
  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and modern development standards across the team
  • Collaborate within a wider Team Lead group to share practice horizontally across the engineering function

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Requirements

  • Proven commercial Flutter and Dart experience, with a track record of shipping and maintaining production mobile apps
  • Genuine mobile engineering background: understanding of mobile architecture, lifecycle, state management, platform channels, release pipelines and the realities of iOS and Android, not just a backend engineer who has picked up Flutter
  • Previous experience as a Team Lead, Tech Lead or senior-plus engineer with real people leadership responsibility
  • Hands-on with modern engineering practices: CI/CD, automated testing, code review, secure development
  • Comfortable coaching and developing engineers of varying levels, taking accountability without over-centralising decisions
  • Experience operating in Agile, product-aligned teams with a focus on customer value and iterative delivery
  • Strong communicator across technical and non-technical stakeholders

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to wider stacks the business uses (C#, React, Node, TypeScript, AWS)
  • Prior experience lifting mobile standards inside a team that has historically been backend-weighted
  • Background in high-volume consumer or ecommerce mobile apps
  • Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools and agentic workflows

This role would suit a hands-on engineering lead with real mobile roots who wants to bring proper mobile DNA into a Flutter team that’s ready for it, while still writing code and setting the standard day to day.
