Site Reliability Engineer – International Consumer Bank at JPMorgan Chase

About the Role
As a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) within JPMorgan Chase’s International Consumer Bank, you’ll play a critical role in enhancing the reliability, resilience, observability, and operability of digital banking services. Working collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive team, you’ll deliver seamless customer experiences while fostering a solution-oriented culture with an interest in innovative technology and the financial sector.
This position is ideal for individuals with a curious mindset, a passion for developing automation, reliability metrics, and operational excellence, and a desire to partner across engineering, product, and platform teams.
Responsibilities
- Drive continuous improvement of reliability, monitoring, and alerting for mission-critical microservices.
- Reduce operational toil by designing reliable infrastructure and tooling that streamlines feature development.
- Develop meaningful service metrics, including user journeys, service-level indicators (SLIs), service-level objectives (SLOs), error budgets, and actionable dashboards.
- Collaborate with development teams from initial design through execution to embed reliability and scalability into product architecture.
- Design and implement self-healing and resiliency patterns, such as:
- Graceful degradation
- Rate limiting
- Circuit breakers
- Failover strategies
- Partner with engineering, product, and platform teams to strengthen reliability standards and processes across all departments.
- Conduct performance testing and capacity planning to identify and address bottlenecks before they impact customers.
- Participate in feature planning to ensure metrics, alerting, logging, automation, reliability, scalability, and performance requirements are built in from the outset.
- Leverage approved AI tools to enhance workflows—examples include:
- Root-cause analysis acceleration
- Automated log and trace investigation
- Runbook drafting
- Post-incident analysis
- Test scaffolding and virtualisation
- Technical documentation streamlining
- Continuously develop AI skills relevant to the role, focusing on:
- Effective prompt engineering
- Validating AI outputs
- Automation workflows
- Secure usage patterns (confidential or sensitive data handling)

Required Qualifications, Capabilities & Skills
- Formal training or certification in software engineering principles, complemented by advanced applied experience.
- Proven expertise as a software engineer, including proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Go, or Java).
- Demonstrated hands-on development experience:
- Designing, coding, testing, and delivering software across any technology stack.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, particularly in distributed systems environments.
- Experience as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) or a support-focused software engineer in production environments.
- Working knowledge of microservice infrastructure components, including:
- Service discovery
- Ingress/load balancing
- Internal networking
- Kubernetes expertise (deployment, scaling, or troubleshooting).
- Real-world cloud computing experience (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud*).
- Familiarity with observability and reliability tools, such as:
- Grafana, Prometheus (for monitoring)
- Elasticsearch & Kibana (logs & analytics)
- Jaeger (tracing)
- Ability to use AI-assisted tools responsibly, including:
- Validating AI-generated outputs
- Recognising failure modes
- Applying secure information-handling standards for sensitive data

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities & Skills
- Specialised knowledge of AWS (services, tooling, best practices).
- Experience building internal reliability tooling (e.g., CLI tools, automation pipelines, Kubernetes operators or controllers).
- Focus on developer experience enhancements, including:
- Developing golden paths and paved roads
- Documenting and reusable engineering patterns
- Applied AI in operational workflows, such as:
- Alert enrichment
- Incident summarisation
- Automated runbook generation
- AI-assisted anomaly detection and triage (using approved tools)
