Role Summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Sensing & System development Engineer working on electrical sensing technology in the GE Monitoring & Diagnostics (M&D) business, within Grid Automation (GA). The M&D product line is a class leading vendor of sensing devices and systems to Electrical Utilities and Industrial customers. The product line spans sensing of multiple asset types and has a broad portfolio of advanced technology, which aid customers to understand and optimize the operating condition of key assets such as HV/MV power transformers and circuit breakers.
This role will be focused on the ongoing development and expansion on GE DGA900 and BMT product lines as well as emerging electrical sensing technologies, working on enhancements to the existing products and on new product developments and features.
The successful candidate will work as a key technology expert within the R&D team, applying an understanding of electrical sensing technology and system design to provide technical leadership in NPI projects (new product introduction), system design and system test guidance where appropriate, and technical and project leadership in focused R&D initiatives. This role will involve close collaboration with electrical, mechanical, and embedded software design team and other sensing experts working in a team environment to define new requirements and provide technical leadership on feature delivery. The role will also provide support to continuous improvement (CI) initiatives and product quality support where required.
Role Responsibilities
- Develop and apply system expertise to refine and develop M&D monitoring products, demonstrating clear understanding of operational principles, design and usage.
- Work collaboratively within a diverse cross-functional teams to define, design and develop new system concepts and features for M&D monitoring products, developing system, designs and architecture to support key projects.
- Work hands-on with electronics and mechanical components, and software integration (e.g., scripting, test firmware) to build and iterate on early design concepts with long-term system architecture and manufacturability in mind.
- Produce early-stage system design documentation, such as block diagrams, interface definitions, and communication protocol summaries, to support technical alignment and future development.
- Maintain a well-documented approach to builds, ensuring traceability and clarity of setup and outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to understand customer needs, system requirements and constraints.
- Identify and lead development of product design requirements, improvements and best practice in system design and process.
- Participate in hands-on system testing and validation within a dynamic team, recording results and observations in structured formats.
- Present prototype findings and experimental data clearly to wider team to inform design direction and risk reduction.
- Work collaboratively within diverse international and cross-functional teams which may include occasional international travel.
- Apply GE Vernova way principles in day-to-day work with a safety-first mindset.
- Carry out additional duties as requested by the line manager.

Essential Criteria
- Degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience in industrial product design, development and test and from concept to deployment.
- Demonstrated experience in requirements development and management including breakdown of high level customer or business requirements to technical hardware and firmware designs.
- Proven strong record in technical leadership experience in a multi-disciplinary product development project from concept to deployment.
- Experience of development processes such as SAFe, Agile, etc and their use in product development.
- Advanced documentation and communication skills to support knowledge transfer and design traceability.
- Curiosity and initiative: willing to ask questions, try new approaches, and explore design alternatives.
- Ability to collaborate with large, cross-functional and diverse teams, including remote environments to align on key design decisions.
- Ability to communicate technical matters clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally.
- Safety-first mindset, leading by example especially when working with lab hardware, electronics, and test environments and with focus on product safety.

Desirable Criteria
- Experience in transformer and substation monitoring equipment and techniques.
- R&D leadership experience on technology development projects, including project strategy, project scope development and project technical delivery.
- Demonstrated experience of designing and operation of highly sensitive scientific/electronic equipment.
- Demonstrated experience working on electrical sensing technologies and products, e.g. for Grid applications (such as bushing monitoring, partial discharge, CT sensors).
- Experience in software programming languages and/or analytical software packages (e.g. Python, R, Matlab) and automation tools (e.g. Labview, Simulink).
- Experience in delivering technical projects with remote teams, including detailed requirements specification for remote implementation of hardware/software features and deliverables.
- Design of hardware systems utilizing embedded processors, DSPs, memory devices, OPAMPs, A/D and D/A converters, as well as other peripheral devices (such as MODBUS, USB interfaces, Ethernet and I2C interfaces).
- Experience of hands-on prototyping or experimental builds involving sensors, embedded systems, or electromechanical devices.
- Familiarity with lab tools (oscilloscopes, soldering, DAQs, environmental test rigs, etc.) and safe lab practices.
