We're looking for an experienced Lead Technical Architect to join Amber Labs and support a major UK public sector digital transformation programme.
The Opportunity
You'll play a key role in shaping the technical architecture behind the delivery of government services through mobile applications, digital identity and digital credentials.
- Work across legacy, strategic and modern government platforms, helping integrate services across multiple departments and technology estates.
- The role combines strategic architecture with hands-on delivery, working closely with engineering teams to develop practical, secure and scalable solutions across AWS, Azure and GCP.
- Take accountability for progressing architecture through technical governance forums, influencing senior stakeholders and helping teams navigate complex cross-department dependencies.
What You'll Be Doing
Technical Architecture
- Shape end-to-end technical architecture for app-native journeys and digital credentials.
- Produce HLDs, LLDs, architecture diagrams and technical design documentation.
- Define integration patterns, APIs, technology choices and technical dependencies.
- Ensure solutions align with enterprise and strategic architecture.
- Work closely with engineering teams to translate architecture into delivery.

Digital Identity & Credentials
- Design solutions involving authentication, authorisation and digital identity.
- Support integration with GOV.UK One Login and digital wallet technologies.
- Work with OID4VC / OpenID for Verifiable Credentials and mDoc / ISO 18013-5.
- Consider credential issuance, presentation, verification, security and privacy requirements.
Cross-Government Integration
- Design integrations across multiple government departments and technology estates.
- Bring together legacy, strategic and modern digital applications.
- Influence stakeholders and resolve technical dependencies across organisational boundaries.
Cloud & DevOps
- Work across AWS, Azure and GCP environments.
- Promote modern DevOps, CI/CD, automation and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- Work with engineering teams to improve delivery, reliability and operational efficiency.
Architecture Governance & Leadership
- Take accountability for progressing technical decisions through government and programme governance.
- Work with enterprise, security and technical architects to ensure compliance with required standards.
- Identify and manage technical risks, dependencies and architectural constraints.
- Provide technical leadership and influence across multidisciplinary and multi-department teams.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Strong commercial experience as a Technical Architect, Solution Architect, Lead Architect or equivalent.
- Significant experience delivering complex digital transformation programmes.
- Strong UK Government / central government experience.
- Proven cross-government or cross-department integration experience.
- Strong experience producing HLDs, LLDs and technical architecture documentation.
- Experience taking architecture through formal technical governance.
- Strong cloud architecture experience across AWS, Azure and/or GCP.
- Strong API and integration architecture experience.
- Experience with identity, authentication and authorisation / IAM.
- Experience with GOV.UK One Login or equivalent government identity platforms.
- Experience with digital identity, verifiable credentials or digital wallets.
- Understanding of OID4VC / OpenID for Verifiable Credentials.
- Experience with or strong understanding of mDoc / ISO 18013-5.
- Strong understanding of DevOps, CI/CD and automation.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills.

Desirable
- Previous GDS or major government digital platform experience.
- Experience with OID4VCI, OID4VP, OAuth 2.0 or OpenID Connect.
- Experience working across AWS, Azure and GCP.
- Experience implementing DevOps practices at scale.
- Experience working with legacy and modern technology estates.
