Lead Vehicle Technician - Avonmouth

We are seeking a highly skilled vehicle technician to join our Transport Services team as a lead vehicle technician. This role aligns to the Master Technician role profile. In addition to completing vehicle repairs, our Master Technicians are also required to:
- Support the delivery of change initiatives within the workshop
- Coach and support vehicle technicians
- Diagnose & repair specialist equipment, including police equipment and motorcycles*, and
- Provide resilience by deputising for the Workshop Controller and/or working from our satellite workshops when required
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in maintaining, repairing and developing a diverse fleet of operational vehicles that support frontline policing.
As a Master Technician, you will be required to work on specialist police equipment and motorcycles; we will provide training where required.
What You'll Be Doing
- Apply technical knowledge and skills to effectively service, preventatively maintain and repair all types of fleet vehicles, including cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, plant and equipment.
- Deputising for the Workshop Controller, working within our Workshop Control office to allocate work and liaise with Service Reception and our administration teams where required.
- Working to the highest of standards to ensure officer safety whilst vehicles are driven and tested in the most arduous of conditions.
- Accurately record all labour, parts and consumables on your job card and uploading this to our electronic fleet management systems.
- Diagnosing and resolving defects with vehicles and their police system installations, including police warning equipment, communication technology and on-board systems (we’ll train you on the maintenance of police equipment if necessary). Where necessary, you may be required to accompany police officers on high-speed road testing.
- Remain up to date with technical and product developments around vehicle maintenance and on-board systems. We’re proud to maintain a late-model fleet and are innovating nationally with the introduction of electric and hybrid police response vehicles.
- Quality assuring repairs and maintenance work to ensure vehicles remain safe, compliant and operationally effective.
- Supporting and developing workshop colleagues through coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing.
- Identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce vehicle downtime and enhance service delivery and supporting the implementation of new technologies.
- Master Technicians are required to occasionally work from satellite workshop locations to provide cover for any staff absence. A fleet vehicle will be provided to travel to and from other workshops where required.

Essential
What we're looking for
- You must hold a City and Guilds Advanced Technical Certificate in the Automotive Industry (Level 3) or NVQ Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Level 3) or BTEC in Motor Vehicle Engineering (Level 3) or equivalent.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to a range of audiences.
- A commitment to creating a culture of continuous development and learning.
- Must hold a full current driving licence and be prepared to become a Force authorised driver.
- Must have previous practical experience of working within the motor vehicle trade with a strong vehicle repair background. It’s essential that you have current and up-to-date knowledge of vehicle technology including electric vehicles to provide maintenance and repairs to a very high standard.
- We’re looking for a Master Technician that can work with us to continuously drive change and improve our Transport function. Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with the ability to effectively support change is essential.
- The post holder must be computer literate and have experience of vehicle diagnostic equipment and/or fleet management systems (we currently use Jaama Key2).
Desirable
- A City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Engineering (Level 5) and/or membership of a professional institute such as AFP, IMI or IRTE.
- Whilst experience working with motorcycles and/or emergency service vehicles is desirable, training will be required to the successful applicant if required.
- Previous experience of team development and the development of others.
- Previous experience liaising with customers and suppliers to deliver excellent customer service and industry-leading results, is desirable.

Additional Information
Working Hours
The working hours will be split across a two-week shift pattern:
- Week 1 – Monday to Thursday working 07.00-15.00 and Friday 07.00-14.30
- Week 2 – Monday to Thursday working 11.00-19.00 and Friday 11.30-19.00
Reporting Line
This role directly reports to a Workshop Controller.

In person interviews will take place w/c 19th October 2026.
This role will be based at our Avonmouth workshop. Travel to our other workshops in Bridgwater, Midsomer Norton and Yeovil will be occasionally required (we will provide a fleet vehicle for business travel).
To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 3 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
