Lead Waste Engineer

Ready to take the next step in your waste management career while working a full-time, four-day week? This Lead Waste Engineer opportunity at Winfrith offers Monday to Thursday working, with Friday working available if preferred, alongside the chance to shape radioactive waste strategy across major decommissioning activities.

Whether you're already operating in a senior waste management position or looking to take the next step in your career following the successful completion of a nuclear graduate programme where we could consider this a developmental opportunity, this role offers the opportunity to broaden your influence, develop leadership experience and play a key role in shaping radioactive waste management strategy at site level. Your expertise will directly contribute to the safe progression of decommissioning activities and the continued development of waste management capability at Winfrith.

What You Will Be Doing

You'll provide expert guidance on radioactive waste management matters across a diverse range of projects and operational activities. Working across multiple teams, you'll help ensure waste requirements are considered early, risks are understood and practical solutions are developed that support safe and compliant delivery.

You'll also play a key role in strengthening waste management capability across the site. Whether supporting future strategy, advising on regulatory matters or developing less experienced colleagues, you'll help drive high standards and continuous improvement within the function.

All of this is delivered through a full-time role structured across four days each week, giving you an additional day to spend on the things that matter most to you.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
