About The Role

Working outdoors in all weathers, the Leakage Technician will fit devices across Berwick-upon-Tweed's water network to identify and locate leaks, protecting supplies and cutting waste. This full-time, temporary post runs for twelve months at £14.90 per hour, covering 37 hours weekly. Each day brings long walks through rural land and busy town centres, so physical fitness and resilience matter. Practical skills in fitting equipment, fault finding, and careful recording are essential, alongside a methodical approach and comfort working alone or within a small crew. The successful candidate helps Northumbrian Water minimise loss and safeguard resources for customers throughout the region.

Pertemps are delighted to be recruiting on behalf of Northumbrian Water for a Leakage Technician to join their team in the Berwick area.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving problems, and making a real difference to customers. You’ll play an important role in fitting devices which will identify and locate leaks across the water network, helping to protect water supplies and minimise waste.

This is a hands-on, outdoor role and you’ll be required to work outside in all weather conditions, including cold, wet, and windy conditions. The role can involve walking long distances each day and working in a variety of environments, from rural areas to busy town centres.

You’ll also be responsible for fitting and installing monitoring and leak detection devices to manholes, so you’ll need to be comfortable working around the water network and carrying out practical, physical tasks outdoors.

Using specialist equipment and mobile technology, your responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying and locating leaks on water mains and service pipes
  • Fitting monitoring and leak detection devices to manholes
  • Using techniques such as sounding, correlating, and noise logging
  • Carrying out planned leakage surveys
  • Responding to reactive and urgent leak detection requirements
  • Investigating potential leaks and providing accurate information for repairs
  • Using monitoring equipment and mobile technology to identify potential leakage
  • Working independently across the water network
  • Speaking with customers and explaining findings and solutions
  • Working to set productivity and accuracy targets

The role is a mixture of proactive and reactive work, so no two days will be the same. You’ll be provided with a fully equipped van and fuel card for business use, with the van kept at your home address when not in use.

About You

You don’t necessarily need previous experience within the water industry. Full training and support will be provided, so we’re looking for someone with the right attitude and willingness to learn.

You’ll Ideally Have

  • A full UK manual driving licence
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Confidence using mobile technology, including smartphones and tablets
  • The ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Comfort working around manholes and carrying out practical, physical tasks
  • The ability to walk long distances and work outdoors for extended periods
  • The flexibility to work evenings and weekends when required

Previous experience in leakage detection, utilities, engineering, construction, or the water industry would be advantageous, but is not essential.

The role covers the Berwick supply area, so applicants should ideally live within 30 miles of the working area.

Please note: This role is classed as a safety/security critical position. As part of the pre-employment process, successful candidates will be required to undergo a drug and alcohol test. Failure to pass the test may result in the offer of employment being withdrawn.

A DBS check will also be required prior to employment.
