The role
The School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol is seeking to appoint an outstanding Lecturer in Human Geography to join one of the UK’s leading geography departments. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to an intellectually vibrant and collegial academic community, renowned for excellence in teaching and internationally recognised research.
This fixed-term post has been created to provide teaching capacity during a Leverhulme Research Fellowship. You will play a central role in delivering an outstanding educational experience for our undergraduate and postgraduate students, contributing to a broad portfolio of Human Geography teaching while helping to sustain the School’s collaborative and supportive academic culture.
What will you be doing?
- You will contribute to teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate geography programmes, delivering engaging, research-informed teaching across core areas of the discipline as well as specialist topics aligned with School needs.
- You will prepare and deliver lectures, seminars and workshops, design assessments, provide high-quality feedback, and supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate research projects.
- The successful candidate will also contribute to the development of project-based and experiential learning, including qualitative methods teaching and dissertation skills, and will work closely with colleagues to enhance curricula and the student learning experience.
- Alongside teaching, you will undertake academic administration, provide academic and pastoral support to students, and participate fully in the academic life of the School.

You should apply if
- You are an enthusiastic and committed Human Geographer with experience of teaching in Higher Education and a passion for inspiring students.
- You will have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Human Geography or a closely related discipline, together with the ability to teach confidently across a range of Human Geography topics beyond your immediate research specialism.
- You will have experience of designing and delivering high-quality teaching and assessment, supervising student research, and creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Strong organisational skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues are essential.
- We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience of qualitative methods teaching, field-based education, curriculum development, or the use of innovative approaches to learning and assessment. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (or willingness to work towards it) would also be advantageous.
