Contract: 12 month maternity cover contract. For existing Birmingham City University employees, this opportunity may be offered as a secondment, subject to agreement with your current line manager.

Role Summary
We are seeking a Lecturer in Real Estate to contribute to teaching, professional practice, and scholarship across our built environment portfolio, including Quantity Surveying, Construction Project Management, Real Estate, and related disciplines.
The successful candidate will join a forward-looking academic community committed to teaching excellence, industry engagement, and student success. Our programmes combine academically rigorous learning with professional relevance, preparing graduates to contribute ethically, sustainably, and innovatively to the built environment sector. We value strong student support, inclusive learning, and an educational culture that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours required to succeed in contemporary practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach across design studios and/or contextual studies, supporting students in development of conceptual, technical and professional skills.
- Deliver research-informed, practice-aligned teaching that strengthens abilities in drawing, modelling, detailing, representation, digital workflows, material specification and spatial strategy.
- Support curriculum delivery that reflects sustainability, social responsibility, digital literacy, material innovation and global futures.
- Provide responsible pastoral support, encouraging engagement, wellbeing, academic integrity and professional conduct.
- Help students connect design ideas to real-world considerations, including technical requirements, ethical implications, industry and regulatory standards.
- Contribute to industry-focused learning activities, such as external talks, practice workshops, or live briefs that enhance professional awareness and employability.

Essential Requirements
- You will bring professional experience from the built environment sector together with a reflective, evidence-informed approach to teaching that raises student ambition and develops their confidence as emerging professionals.
- You will demonstrate expertise in one or more built environment disciplines, such as quantity surveying, construction project management, real estate, construction economics, commercial management, project delivery, asset management, sustainability, housing, development, or the wider property and construction sector, and be able to connect contemporary professional practice with intellectually rigorous and engaging learning.
- You will demonstrate a commitment to high-quality student support, recognising that academic excellence is strengthened by a respectful, inclusive, and professionally focused learning environment.
- The successful candidate will have significant professional experience within the built environment sector and will ideally hold, or be working towards, membership of a relevant professional body such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS/FRICS), the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB/FCIOB), the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), or an equivalent professional qualification relevant to their discipline.
