The Role

Fleetwood Nautical College, part of the Blackpool and The Fylde College group and one of the UK's leading centres for maritime education and training, is seeking an experienced Casual Bank Lecturer in Marine Engineering to join our growing Maritime Engineering team.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering our Small Vessel Chief Engineer (SVCE) provision, preparing apprentices and cadets for their MCA written examinations and oral assessments, and supporting teaching in electrical and electronic engineering. You will hold a Class 1 Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency, or equivalent seagoing management level experience, and bring a strong understanding of marine engineering systems alongside a genuine passion for developing the next generation of seafarers.

A teaching qualification or Advance HE Fellowship would be desirable, although we will support the right candidate to achieve this. With a significant new cohort of apprentices about to begin, this is an exciting opportunity to share your professional expertise, help raise examination success, and contribute to the continued growth of our small vessel training offer, working alongside dedicated colleagues on our specialist campus with its engine room simulators and workshop facilities on the Fylde coast.

Essential

  • Holder of Maritime and Coastguard Agency marine engineering certification, ideally a Class 1 Chief Engineer (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency, or an equivalent senior marine engineering qualification
  • Recent sea going or examination system experience, so that the candidate is familiar with the current structure, standard and expectations of the MCA written and oral examinations
  • Ability to teach across marine engineering subjects including electrical, electronic and control content relevant to the Maritime Engineering programme

Desirable

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in marine engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or a closely related discipline
  • A recognised teaching qualification, for example a PGCE, Certificate in Education or Diploma in Education and Training
  • Fellowship or Membership of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy), or willingness to work towards it
  • Experience of assessing, internally verifying or preparing candidates for professional maritime examinations

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
