About the Role
As part of our commitment to the continued expansion of pharmacy and medicine at Bangor University, the newly formed North Wales Medical School seeks to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Science, with a focus on Pharmaceutical Chemistry, to contribute to the development of our MPharm degree programme. The MPharm programme was launched in September 2025 and is about to take in its second intake. This post is advertised through a Teaching-focussed (T&S) route and dependent on experience and potential, the successful applicant may be appointed as either a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer.
The successful candidate will be educated to PhD level or equivalent in pharmaceutical chemistry and/or pharmaceutics or a relevant subject area and must have experience of teaching within a UK based school of pharmacy or medicine.
The post is full-time and permanent, and the successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as practical. Applications will also be considered from those who wish to carry out this role on a part-time or job-share basis with discussion and approval. This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Working with the Head of the North Wales Medical School, the post-holder will:
Teaching Duties
- Support the development and delivery of innovative approaches (significantly and sustained for SL) to course design, learning, teaching, and assessment practice.
- Plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes.
- Act as module organiser for subject-specific modules within the MPharm programme.
- Develop new teaching materials, programmes and methodologies influencing the pedagogy of the subject.
- Motivate students to proactive engagement in learning, and provide meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
- Act as personal tutor to a number of undergraduate and postgraduate students, providing advice, guidance and support.
- Be willing to contribute to the development and teaching of other relevant programmes (BSc, Masters, PhD, CPD, etc.) within the College.
- Participation in academic quality assurance as relevant to the post, including having a key role in on-going curriculum review processes, including the review of modules and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms.
- Champion Learning and Teaching and Student Engagement across the University and undertake a role (significant and sustained for SL) in the development and use of VLE and other forms of learning technologies.
Grade 9 Senior Lecturer Teaching responsibilities will include, in addition to the above:
- Lead on aspects of curriculum development and delivery.
- Disseminate and publish results of scholarly activity (for SL) as lead author in high quality, leading, peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, articles or monographs.

Administrative And Wider Contribution Duties
- Participate in the student recruitment and induction procedures of the School (e.g. School and University Open Days).
- Contribute to the promotion and external profile of the School.
- Contribute to the School's/College’s management, and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. director of teaching, senior tutor, exams officer or admissions officer roles).
- Contribute to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.
- Contributing to addressing undergraduate and post graduate student experience and student recruitment and retention.
- Lead in knowledge transfer and impact activities.
- Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g. leadership of school or College projects, which may involve interdisciplinary groups, membership of School boards and task groups).

- The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification
Qualifications/Training
Essential
- Educated to PhD level or equivalent in pharmaceutical chemistry or a relevant subject area. Experience of teaching and/or leadership within a UK school of pharmacy or medicine.
- In addition to the above, to be appointed at grade 8 or 9:
- Minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment or a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCertHE) OR recognised by HEA as a Fellow / Recognised by Advance HE as a Fellow (For Grade 8) or Senior Fellow (SL).
Desirable
- Ability to teach across the areas of both pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutics, e.g. in areas such as physical chemistry and chemistry applied to drug formulation.
Experience/Knowledge
Essential
- Experience of teaching in higher education with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.
- Experience in developing and delivering innovative approaches to curriculum design, module development, teaching methods, and assessment.
- Have experience of teaching in higher education with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.
- Demonstrate effective teaching capability in a relevant subject area.
In Addition, To Be Appointed At Grade 8
- Experience of module development and delivery in higher education.
- Experience of supervising undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
- Experience of teaching at higher education level with evidence of excellence in teaching and successful student learning outcomes.

- Demonstrated leadership in the design, delivery, or enhancement of high-quality courses, and in contributing to departmental initiatives that improve teaching.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching (e.g. teaching profile, peer observation, student feedback, teaching award).
- Evidence of involvement in academic quality assurance assessments (e.g. annual course monitoring, internal and/or external validation panels).
Desirable
- Evidence of recognition as an authority and leader in discipline (e.g. through conference participation as invited speaker with national and/or international reach).
- Evidence of scholarship relating to learning and teaching through publication in referred journals and/or books, articles and/or conference proceedings.
