The Role
The Legal Associate is a flexible, volunteer, part-time, and remote position. This role will support CISES's operational and research functions with legal insight across our areas of work; helping to ensure our operations, communications and policy teams operate compliantly and manage risk across our day-to-day activities, partnerships, and public-facing communications.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Operations team with review of contracts, partnership agreements, contributor terms, and governance documentation
- Advise on data protection, privacy, and compliance considerations relevant to CISES's operations (e.g. volunteer/contributor data, event attendee data)
- Support the Communications team with legal review of public-facing content, including social media posts, press materials, and event promotion, to manage reputational and legal risk
- Advise on legal considerations relevant to partnerships, sponsorships, and institutional collaborations (e.g. with universities or event co-hosts)
- Flag emerging regulatory issues (EU, UK, and where relevant, US) that may affect CISES's operations or public communications, such as sanctions-related restrictions on partners or speakers
- Help maintain internal templates and SOPs for recurring legal/compliance needs (e.g. standard contributor agreements, event partnership terms)

Skills and Qualifications required
- Familiarity with EU and UK law relevant to organisational operations (e.g. contract law, data protection/GDPR, employment/volunteer arrangements, compliance)
- Legal qualification, or currently studying towards one (e.g. LLB, LLM, GDL, or equivalent)
- Strong attention to detail and practical, risk-aware judgement, with the ability to translate legal considerations into clear guidance for non-legal colleagues
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a remote, volunteer-driven environment
- Familiarity with US law relevant to data protection or compliance is an asset
- Previous experience in academia, policy, operations, or at a think tank is desirable
