SCOPE OF ROLE

The Legal and Commercial Assistant will provide administrative, contractual, and compliance support to the Legal and Commercial team, ensuring the smooth operation of business processes and adherence to legal, regulatory, and commercial standards.

This role will support the drafting, review, and management of contracts, coordinate documentation across projects, and assist in the governance of commercial activities across the business. It's ideal for someone with strong attention to detail, organisational skills, and an interest in developing a career in commercial or legal operations within the infrastructure and energy sector.

Purpose of the Role

The Legal and Commercial Assistant will provide administrative, contractual, and compliance support to the Legal and Commercial team, ensuring the smooth operation of business processes and adherence to legal, regulatory, and commercial standards.

This role will support the drafting, review, and management of contracts, coordinate documentation across projects, and assist in the governance of commercial activities across the business. Key Responsibilities

Contract Administration & Support

  • Support the preparation, review, and administration of commercial contracts, NDAs, subcontracts, and supplier agreements.
  • Maintain an organised contract management system, ensuring version control, approvals, and timely renewals.
  • Track key contractual obligations, milestones, and notices in coordination with project and commercial managers.
  • Assist in the preparation of tender and bid documentation, ensuring compliance with client and legal requirements.

Legal Support

  • Provide administrative assistance to the legal team on document management, compliance tracking, and record-keeping.
  • Support the drafting of simple legal correspondence, letters, and summaries under supervision.
  • Coordinate with external counsel on document collation and billing processes when required.
  • Assist in monitoring regulatory and legislative developments relevant to the company's operations (e.g. construction law, utilities regulation, data protection).

Commercial Governance & Reporting

  • Support the implementation of internal commercial policies, procedures, and templates.
  • Assist in gathering and maintaining data for commercial reporting, audits, and risk registers.
  • Help ensure compliance with insurance, bonding, and financial assurance requirements on projects.
  • Coordinate approval workflows for contracts and commercial documentation through internal governance systems.

Cross-functional Coordination

  • Liaise with project managers, procurement, and finance teams to ensure contractual and commercial consistency.
  • Assist in internal training sessions, briefings, and communications related to legal and commercial best practices.
  • Provide administrative and diary support to the Head of Legal & Commercial where required.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience in a legal, commercial, or contracts administration role (minimum 1–2 years).
  • Good working knowledge of contract documentation and procurement processes.
  • Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office and document management systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in construction, utilities, or engineering sectors.
  • Familiarity with standard contract forms (e.g. NEC, FIDIC, JCT).
  • Paralegal qualification, legal studies, or similar (e.g. CILEX, LLB).
  • Basic understanding of data protection, corporate governance, or compliance principles.
