Heriot Brown is speaking with investment and funds lawyers about a potential opportunity within the Legal and Governance function of a leading UK pension asset manager.
The business is FCA-regulated and operates on behalf of local government pension funds with collective assets of over £100 billion. Its focus is on delivering long-term investment outcomes for the people and communities those pension funds serve.
Its investment offering spans public markets, private markets and real estate, including equities, fixed income, private equity, private credit and infrastructure. This creates an interesting setting for a lawyer looking to apply their investment expertise within a broad in-house environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The opportunity
The business is considering how to strengthen its investment and funds legal capability. There is scope to shape a position around the right person, rather than recruit against a fixed job description.
The anticipated focus would include:
- Providing legal support on investment and fund-related matters across the business’s investment activities.
- Reviewing and negotiating investment-related agreements and fund documentation.
- Working closely with investment colleagues and external legal advisers.
- Contributing to the wider corporate and commercial work of the legal team.
This would suit someone who wants to bring specialist investment knowledge into an in-house team while continuing to develop a broader commercial perspective.
About you
You will be a qualified lawyer, likely with approximately 2–6 years’ PQE, and substantive experience in investment funds or investment management, gained in private practice or in-house. We are particularly interested in lawyers whose background is genuinely investment-focused and who enjoy understanding the commercial context behind their advice.

You may already be based in Leeds or elsewhere in the North, live within commuting distance, or be seriously considering relocating from London or another market.
The requirement is to work from the Leeds office three days per week. The office is centrally located, a short walk from the station.
Why consider it?
Alongside the breadth of investment activity, the business places a clear emphasis on professional development, including relevant training, qualifications and coaching.
For the right lawyer, this could offer the chance to retain a specialist investment focus, broaden your in-house experience and help shape how the legal team supports the business.
“It took my CV and asked me questions relevant to understanding what kind of jobs to suggest for me. Suggestions were almost perfect. Jobs were exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
