About Alfred
At Alfred we're building a household services provider to be proud of. Energy, mobile, broadband, and insurance all under one roof.
We believe people shouldn't overpay for services that are essential to their home. Alfred will buy energy, broadband, mobile, and insurance wholesale and pass on the savings to our members for one flat membership. One log-in, one relationship, one view of everything.
We are a mission-driven team with strong backing and a big vision: to free our members from the cost and hassle of running their home. More life, less admin.
The role
This role sits at the centre of the action, and no two days look the same. Four regulated markets, four regulators, a European expansion, and a business that is still being built.
One month you're taking Alfred through direct authorisation with the FCA. The next you're setting up entities in new jurisdictions across Europe, writing a single consolidated member agreement that has to work across energy, mobile, broadband, and insurance at once, or scoping the legal requirements for a new service we haven't launched yet.
Around all of that sits the work that keeps a company running. Commercial, corporate, industry-specific rules across all four services, data protection, tax, and employment. Not always glamorous, always important.
You'll keep us on the right side of the ASA, Ofcom, Ofgem, and the FCA, bringing in outside counsel where we need specialist depth and coordinating them so the advice lands as one coherent view rather than four separate opinions.
You'll also sit close to the commercial deals. Alfred's economics depend on the wholesale agreements we sign with suppliers, so you'll be in the room for the negotiations that matter and you'll be expected to have a view on the deal, not only the drafting.
We're hiring someone ambitious. Do this well and you'll build the function around you.
What you'll do
- Lead Alfred's application for direct authorisation with the FCA, from gap analysis through to permissions granted, and build the compliance framework that sits underneath it
- Build our consolidated member agreement, one set of terms covering energy, mobile, broadband, and insurance, that a person can actually read
- Set up new entities as we expand across Europe, and work out what each new market asks of us before we get there
- Scope the legal and regulatory requirements for new products and services, early enough to shape what we build rather than react to it
- Own day-to-day compliance across the ASA, Ofcom, Ofgem, and the FCA, and keep the leadership team ahead of what's coming
- Brief, coordinate, and challenge our external lawyers so we get sharp advice without paying for the same thinking twice
- Drive the legal side of commercial negotiations with wholesale suppliers and partners, working alongside the CFO and the service leads
- Draft, negotiate, and improve our commercial contracts, and build the templates and clause library that let the business move faster on its own
- Advise product, marketing, and operations on what we can say and how we can say it, especially in advertising and member communications
- Cover the corporate, data protection, tax, and employment work that keeps the business running, and know when to bring in a specialist
- Help us build the function: process, tooling, external panel, and in time, a team

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Must-haves
- Qualified solicitor in England and Wales, or an equivalent common law jurisdiction
- Real experience of FCA-regulated work, ideally inside or advising an authorised firm, and confidence dealing directly with a regulator
- A working knowledge of consumer-facing regulation and what it means in practice, not just what the handbook says
- Comfortable owning commercial negotiations, and able to tell a genuine risk from a theoretical one
- Clear, plain writing. You can explain a regulatory position to a founder in three sentences
- Comfortable in a fast-paced startup where you'll define your role as much as fill it
- Comfortable using AI tools day-to-day, whether for drafting, research, or first-pass review
