Legal Counsel – EMEAO

Having partnered with Monster Energy through years of exponential growth, we’ve seen first-hand how quickly the business has evolved across EMEAO.
That continued growth has created a brand-new opportunity within the Legal, Regulatory & Compliance team for a Legal Counsel to join the business.
This is new headcount, not a replacement, and has been created to add another level of experience into the existing legal structure. The role will sit between the current Legal Counsel and the Senior Legal Counsel heading the function, with a broad remit across EMEAO and plenty of opportunity to take ownership.
Importantly, this is not a commercial contracts role.
The focus here is on product regulation, government affairs, sustainability and packaging legislation, anti-trust and wider legal risk – supporting Monster across the legal and regulatory challenges that come with operating a major FMCG business across multiple international markets.
The role
It’s a broad remit and one that will put you close to both the product and the wider commercial business.
- Advising on product compliance and labelling
- Assessing risk around nutrition or health claims
- Supporting new product development (NPD)
- Engaging directly with regulators
- Helping the business understand the impact of changing legislation across different markets

You’ll also have exposure across government affairs and lobbying, working with trade associations and industry bodies, alongside emerging sustainability and packaging regulation including DRS and PPWR.
Anti-trust is another important part of the remit, working closely with commercial teams to assess risk around new initiatives and support the continued development of compliance across EMEAO.
There’s also the opportunity to provide guidance and mentoring to the paralegal team, depending on experience, while building relationships with senior stakeholders across the wider business.
What are we looking for?
We’re not looking for somebody who can tick every box.
The preference is for a strong Legal Counsel who is approaching that next step into Senior Legal Counsel, or someone who has recently stepped up and is looking for a role with greater breadth, ownership and international exposure.
You’ll be a qualified lawyer with strong experience either in-house or from private practice, ideally with exposure to some combination of:

- Product regulatory / food law
- Government affairs and regulatory engagement
- Sustainability or packaging legislation
- Competition / anti-trust
- Broader in-house legal and regulatory risk
A generalist in-house background could work really well here, with FMCG, food or beverage experience particularly interesting given the nature of the role.
Beyond the technical experience, Monster needs somebody who can make a judgement call.
Someone comfortable assessing risk, giving a clear recommendation and explaining complex legal issues in a way that makes sense to the people actually running the business. You’ll need the confidence to challenge when required, work autonomously and step up when needed.
