We are working with a leading global energy trading business seeking a Legal Counsel to join its growing Legal, Compliance & Contracts function.

This is an opportunity for a commercially minded lawyer to work closely with traders, commercial teams and senior stakeholders across a sophisticated international energy trading business.

You will provide practical, commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of energy and commodities trading activities, helping the business identify and manage legal risk while supporting new trading opportunities.

Legal Counsel – Key Responsibilities

  • Providing technically strong and commercially practical legal advice across the business.
  • Identifying legal risks and recommending pragmatic solutions to manage and mitigate those risks.
  • Supporting the negotiation, drafting and execution of trading documentation and commercial agreements.
  • Advising on transactions involving LNG, coal, power, derivatives/ISDAs and freight.
  • Working closely with traders, commercial teams and senior management on new and existing transactions.
  • Developing a strong understanding of the physical commodities trading lifecycle and the legal issues arising at each stage.
  • Anticipating potential legal and commercial issues and providing proactive advice.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of effective legal processes and documentation.
  • Providing training and guidance to employees on areas including anti-bribery and corruption, competition law, anti-money laundering and sanctions.
  • Providing support on regulatory and compliance matters where required.

Legal Counsel – Key Skills Required

  • Experience advising within energy, commodities or trading environments.
  • Strong knowledge of physical commodities trading contracts and transaction lifecycles.
  • Experience with energy trading documentation and contracts.
  • Exposure to commodities such as LNG, power, coal or related energy products.
  • Experience with ISDAs / derivatives documentation would be highly valuable.
  • Strong commercial contract drafting and negotiation skills.
  • The ability to identify legal risks while remaining focused on practical, commercially viable solutions.
  • Excellent analytical, drafting and communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A commercially minded approach and confidence working with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in compliance or regulatory matters would be advantageous.
