Job Description

As a Legal Specialist you will provide strategic legal advice to commodity trading and shipping businesses while ensuring compliance with internal and external governance requirements. Working closely with an experienced legal team within Anglo American, the role focuses on delivering practical, business-oriented guidance and maintaining strong relationships with key external partners such as law firms.

Key Tasks

The Legal Specialist will be responsible for:

  • Providing legal advice to the commodity trading and shipping businesses in line with our strategy and values;
  • Understanding internal and external governance requirements and enabling assisting stakeholders in efficiently navigating them;
  • Working closely with a team of talented and experienced lawyers within Marketing and the broader Group Legal function to consistently deliver pragmatic advice;
  • Managing relationships with key external stakeholders, including law firms.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate must be a credible legal professional capable of understanding complex transactions and projects across various commodities (e.g. iron ore, copper, nickel), with a healthy curiosity and willingness to work autonomously. The role requires proactive business partnering and robust stakeholder engagement within a global, fast-paced sales and trading environment.

Qualifications

  • Qualified attorney (common law jurisdictions preferred)
  • Minimum 6 years PQE, preferably with some in-house experience (ideally in commodity trading)
  • Strong negotiation and drafting experience, particularly in cross-border commodity trading agreements and associated financing instruments
  • Familiarity with international legal instruments and trading standards (e.g. Incoterms, ScoTA, LME) and trade finance structures
