Hours
- Friday: 5.00pm – 10.00pm
- Saturday: 10.00am – 6.00pm during term time, and 10.00am – 2.30pm during school holidays
- Every other Sunday: 7.30am – 5.00pm
About Uppingham School
Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is a leading co-educational independent boarding school which runs 24/7 in term-time. It has a strong academic profile and excellent pastoral care with an international reputation, and state-of-the-art science, sports and music facilities. Its c. 800 pupils, aged 11–18, are accommodated in 15 boarding houses, taught by over 20 academic departments, and participate in numerous extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, and drama.
Opened in September 2010, Uppingham School Sports Centre (USSC) is a fully dual-use facility and used by 1,300 public members as well as the School. It contains a 6-court sports hall, 25m swimming pool, 60 station fitness studio, gymnasium, squash courts and dance studios. The fitness studio was fully re-equipped in December 2021. It also houses the School's PE Department and includes a hospitality suite for match-day entertaining. USSC is managed and run on behalf of the School by Uppingham School Enterprises Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary, and employs c. 40 full- and part-time staff.

The Role
Reporting to the Duty Manager, you will be the first point of contact within the sports centre for pupils, staff and the general public, representing the Operations Team in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner. Our Leisure Assistants are trained lifeguards who hold a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification to ensure the safety of all our users.

General Responsibilities
- Making sure the centre is kept safe, clean and tidy at all times for our members and pupils to use in compliance with health and safety regulations
- Delivering high levels of customer care to our members and pupils
- Supervising pupils and ensuring their safety
- Maintaining cover of the swimming pool and providing a high level of customer service to all members and pupils
- Greeting all visitors to poolside in an appropriate and friendly manner
- Dealing promptly with enquiries or problems around the building in a friendly, kind and helpful manner
- Carrying out rescues and first aid when necessary
- Completing, signing and dating daily open and close procedures for the Leisure Assistant
- Completing, signing and dating the cleaning and maintenance schedule daily for the Leisure Assistant
- Dealing with any comments or complaints positively and efficiently, following correct procedures
Poolside Responsibilities
- Undertaking general lifeguarding duties and ensuring the pool is never left unattended whilst in use
- Being aware of general pool conditions and reporting any changes from the norm to a duty manager
- Monitoring the number of bathers in the pool and, when numbers exceed specified limits, advising additional lifeguards, the duty manager and reception
- Checking safety equipment and reporting any defect to a duty manager
Housekeeping
- Assisting in the preparation and operation of events and activities, including the assembly and dismantling of equipment in a timely and safe manner
- Ensuring all cleaning duties are carried out as specified by the duty manager and in accordance with the centre's standards
- Patrolling all areas of the centre to ensure all facilities are being used in the correct manner
- Maintaining storage areas in a clean and tidy condition and in accordance with store plans

What We're Looking For
Essential
- NPLQ or the ability to achieve within 1 month
- Knowledge and experience of a customer-focused environment
- Experience of working as part of a team
- Good communication skills and the ability to deal confidently with a wide range of people, including pupils, staff and members of the public
- A customer-focused approach, with a commitment to providing a friendly, professional and high-quality service
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to use own initiative and display a pro-active approach to problem solving
Desirable
- Fitness Instructor Level 2 qualification
- SEQ Swimming Teacher Level 1 or 2 qualification
- Experience of working in a leisure centre environment
Safeguarding
The post-holder's responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact, will be to adhere to and always ensure compliance with the School's Safeguarding (Child Protection) Policy. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school, they must report any concerns to the School's Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Headmaster.
