Job Description
About the Role
This is a varied, hands-on engineering role combining mechanical engineering, technical support, field servicing, CAD design, and research & development. You will work alongside experienced members of the Wastestream team, learning how our machinery is designed, manufactured, installed, serviced, and repaired.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting with the development, manufacture, and assembly of waste compaction and recycling machinery
- Helping to develop and build Wastestream's glass crushing machines and other specialist recycling equipment
- Supporting the installation and commissioning of machinery at customer premises
- Diagnosing faults and repairing compaction and recycling machinery in the field
- Providing technical support to customers, primarily within the hospitality sector
- Carrying out planned servicing and preventative maintenance on machines
- Carrying out deep cleans and refurbishment of machinery
- Learning to identify mechanical and electrical faults and determine suitable repairs
- Assisting with workshop fabrication, assembly, and general engineering tasks
- Using CAD software to produce layouts and designs for customer waste rooms and recycling areas
- Helping develop and implement waste room strategies, including the positioning of machinery, bins, and recycling equipment
- Carrying out customer site surveys to assess whether proposed machinery is suitable for the space and operation
- Taking measurements and gathering technical information during site surveys
- Assisting with machinery specifications and installation planning
- Supporting research and development projects into new recycling methods, machinery, and technologies
- Assisting with the development, prototyping, and testing of new Wastestream machinery
- Testing modifications and improvements to existing machines
- Recording findings from machinery trials and assisting with the ongoing improvement of equipment
- Maintaining tools, workshop equipment, and engineering work areas
- Supporting the wider Wastestream team with engineering and technical projects as required

Course Contents
- Follow health and safety regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Follow procedures in line with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. For example, segregation of resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
- Comply with engineering standards and regulations. For example, British Standards (BS), International Organisation for Standardisation standards (ISO), European Norm (EN).
- Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
- Apply scientific, technical, or engineering principles.
- Apply problem-solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
- Organise, plan, and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
- Identify, organise, and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security, and environmental impact.
- Produce job-specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals, and specifications.
- Provide support and guidance for handover of work to stakeholders. For example, checklists, product or process status, access to supporting documents.
- Record information - paper-based or electronic. For example, energy usage, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, checklists.
- Follow standard operating procedures.
- Follow manufacturer's instructions. For example, safe instructions for use of products, processes, and machinery.

Training Schedule
Apprentices will be required to attend college at least x1 day per week either at Uxbridge, Harrow, or Hayes Campus, completing necessary mandatory training and units associated with the apprenticeship.
The Apprentice Will Be Required To Complete:
- Work towards gaining a full Qualification.
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities
- Skills, Knowledge, and Behaviours
- Standard and End Point Assessment
- Functional Skills in English, maths, and ICT (if required).
Other Training
Other training will be provided by the employer as required to enable the fulfilment of the job role.
Essential Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 4-9)
- Maths (grade 4-9)
