Level 3 Metal Fabricator Apprentice
As our business continues to grow, we are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Level 3 Metal Fabricator Apprentices. This apprenticeship offers an excellent opportunity to gain practical industry experience, achieve a nationally recognised qualification, and develop a long-term career within the steel fabrication industry.
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
As a Level 3 Metal Fabricator Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced fabricators and engineers to learn the skills required to manufacture, assemble, and prepare steel reinforcement products. You will receive structured workplace training while attending Newcastle College as part of your apprenticeship programme.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will build your knowledge and confidence in fabrication processes, engineering principles, quality standards, and safe working practices.
During your apprenticeship, you will learn to:
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and work instructions
- Measure, mark out, and prepare steel materials for fabrication
- Cut, shape, drill, grind, and finish steel components using hand and power tools
- Operate fabrication machinery and workshop equipment safely and efficiently
- Assemble fabricated steel reinforcement products to customer specifications
- Carry out welding activities under supervision and in line with your training programme
- Perform quality inspections to ensure products meet company and industry standards
- Use measuring equipment to verify dimensions and tolerances
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment
- Follow all health, safety, environmental, and company procedures
- Assist with material handling and stock control activities
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across production and operations teams
- Support continuous improvement activities within the workshop

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations, and organisational requirements.
- Comply with environmental legislation, regulations, and organisational requirements.
- Obtain, check, and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
- Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures, and equipment.
- Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance, or testing) using the correct procedures, processes, and/or equipment.
- Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
- Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
- Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
- Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing, etc.
- Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
- Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
- Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing, etc.
- Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
- Set up, check, adjust, and use joining and related equipment.
- Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

Training schedule
- 4 days per week at Midland Steel
- 1 day per week at Newcastle College
Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
