Summary
This course is designed for individuals who want to develop a career in safeguarding. You will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns, support processes, maintain accurate records, work with partner agencies, and contribute to a positive safeguarding culture.
Wage: £18,900 a year

Training course: Safeguarding support officer (level 3)
Hours:
- Monday - Thursday: 7.5 hours between 9:00am - 5:30pm
- Friday: 7.5 hours at Young Gloucestershire (Training Day)
Total hours: 37 hours 30 minutes a week

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience. What you'll do at work includes:
- Act as an initial point of contact for safeguarding concerns within their organisation
- Receive, record and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns
- Gather relevant information to help understand safeguarding concerns
- Support the triage and prioritisation of safeguarding concerns
- Recognise when concerns need to be escalated to the appropriate safeguarding lead or professional
- Support safeguarding referrals and information sharing with relevant agencies
- Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date safeguarding records
- Support the management of safeguarding cases and ongoing monitoring
- Support colleagues to understand and follow safeguarding policies and procedures
- Provide appropriate information and guidance to colleagues within the boundaries of their role
- Contribute to safeguarding meetings, discussions and reviews
- Support the organisation in responding to safeguarding incidents and allegations
- Recognise and respond appropriately to concerns about people in positions of trust
- Contribute to safeguarding audits, reviews and inspections
- Support the development of a positive safeguarding culture within the organisation
- Keep up to date with safeguarding legislation, statutory guidance and good practice
- Develop professional relationships with colleagues and relevant external agencies
- Participate in safeguarding supervision and reflective practice
- Contribute to safeguarding training, briefings and awareness activities where appropriate
- Identify learning from safeguarding activity and contribute to improvements in practice
- Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, integrity and appropriate professional conduct
- Develop their own knowledge, skills and professional development in safeguarding
The exact duties will depend on the apprentice's employing organisation and role, but the workplace must provide opportunities for the apprentice to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the Safeguarding Support Officer apprenticeship standard.
Training Details
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

What you'll learn includes:
- Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns within role and responsibilities.
- Use person-centred communication.
- Use safeguarding legislation and organisational policies and procedures to advise colleagues on safeguarding matters.
- Triage and prioritise safeguarding concerns.
- Recommend courses of action in relation to safeguarding concerns.
- Tailor safeguarding responses to suit the individuals views, feelings and cultural influences.
- Escalate cases to senior staff in accordance with local policy and procedures.
- Report allegations about staff in line with local policies and procedures, whilst maintaining confidentiality.
- Use, record and store paper based and digital data and information securely and in line with local and national policies and procedures.
- Share data and information in a safeguarding context in line with local and national policy and procedures.
- Collate and use data to create reports to inform safeguarding meetings, processes and audits.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date safeguarding logs and registers through the use of digital or paper systems in line with local and national policy and procedures.
- Identify when decisions are not in an individuals best interest and escalate concerns within scope of own role using the local safeguarding escalation pathway.
- Recognise and report incidents to own organisation.
- Provide emotional and practical support to internal and external stakeholders during safeguarding work.
- Support and supervise internal and external stakeholders to make multi-agency referrals.
- Apply safeguarding legislation, local and national policies, procedures and codes of conduct to safeguarding practice within own role.
- Apply safeguarding theory to practice.
- Work together within the wider team to plan and manage safeguarding caseloads.
- Comply with the safeguarding process when a safeguarding concern is raised in line with organisational policy.
- Use communication styles and approaches to suit the needs of individuals.
- Reflect on own performance within a group environment with other colleagues to inform best safeguarding practice.
- Embed lessons learned from local and national safeguarding reviews to practice.
- Assist with the delivery of safeguarding training to stakeholders in accordance with safeguarding training frameworks to ensure stakeholders achieve desired learning outcomes.
- Collate evidence to prepare for external safeguarding inspections, reviews and audits.
- Apply feedback from safeguarding inspections, reviews and audits to improve safeguarding practice.
- Participate in training and continuous professional development activities and evaluate the impact of learning on own practice.
- To seek advice and support from senior staff to preserve own wellbeing and personal safety when required.

Training schedule: Safeguarding Support Officer Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard (ST1030): The apprentice will receive structured training from the Young Gloucestershire training team alongside their workplace learning Training will cover safeguarding legislation and guidance, recognising and responding to concerns, triage and escalation, referrals, information sharing, safeguarding records, case management, multi-agency working, safeguarding reviews, training, audits and professional development The apprentice will build a portfolio of evidence throughout the apprenticeship, demonstrating how they have developed and applied the required knowledge, skills and behaviours in the workplace The apprentice will receive support and preparation for the required end-point assessment The apprenticeship provides an opportunity to develop specialist safeguarding knowledge and practical experience within a real working environment The opportunity will be available for applications over a 12-month period, allowing employers and individuals to identify an appropriate apprenticeship start point.
Requirements
Essential qualifications:
- Full UK Driving License in: Driver's License (grade FULL UK (not provisional))
Desirable qualifications:
- GCSE in: English (grade 4)
- Maths (grade 4)
