Kick-start your civil engineering career with Robert Bird Group (global consulting engineering firm) while studying towards a Level 4 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship.

Wage: £15,600 to £24,784.50, depending on your age
Training course: Civil engineering senior technician (level 4)
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. 9:00am - 5:30pm.

What you'll do at work

  • Support civil engineering projects by creating and modifying engineering drawings, documents and specifications
  • Assist with engineering calculations, technical sketches, plans and reports
  • Collect, analyse and interpret engineering data to support design development
  • Support the use of digital engineering software and tools including CAD, BIM and Revit
  • Assist engineers and technicians with project design and delivery activities
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, engineering standards and environmental requirements
  • Support the implementation of health and safety procedures and site safety requirements
  • Assist in identifying risks and developing solutions to engineering challenges
  • Communicate effectively with project teams, clients and stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Maintain accurate project records and documentation
  • Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and professional behaviours in the workplace

Civil engineering senior technician (level 4)

What you'll learn

Course contents:

  • Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating civil engineering systems
  • Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve civil engineering problems
  • Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts
  • Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined civil engineering problems
  • Produce and interpret civil engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used
  • Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation
  • Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation
  • Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks
  • Apply principles of sustainable development, and assess the impact of these in their work
  • Employ project management techniques, measuring and recording progress against civil engineering project plans
  • Assess and report on quality using appropriate management and assurance systems and continuous improvement processes
  • Identify and use resources, equipment and technology to meet project requirements, including specifications, budget and timescales
  • Monitor and manage individual performance, and supervise others, recognising the need to comply with appropriate codes of practice and equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) requirements
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, using appropriate engineering terminology and conventions
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Training schedule

The apprentice will be enrolled on the Level 4 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship delivered by London South Bank University (LSBU).

Training location: London South Bank University, 103 Borough Road, London, SE1 0AA, alongside workplace learning at Robert Bird Group's London office.

Training schedule: Training will typically be delivered on a day-release basis, with the apprentice attending university during term time and working within the business for the remainder of the week.

Duration: The programme is delivered over 36 months (3 years) and combines academic study with practical workplace experience on live engineering projects.

Off-the-job training: The apprentice will receive protected study time in line with apprenticeship requirements, including lectures, coursework, project work, mentoring and professional development activities.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

  • A Level in: Chemistry (grade E), Mathematics (grade E), Physics (grade E)
  • BTEC in: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma MPP in an Engineer (grade MPP)

Desirable qualifications

  • T Level in: in Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning (grade Pass or Above)

On successful completion of the Level 4 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship, apprentices are expected to progress into a permanent role as a Civil Engineering Technician within Robert Bird Group, supporting the design and delivery of infrastructure and development projects.

Further development opportunities may include:

  • Progression to Senior Civil Engineering Technician roles with increased technical and project responsibilities
  • Professional development towards Engineering Technician (EngTech) status through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • Progression onto a Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (BEng), leading towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) level professional development
  • Long-term opportunities to develop into roles such as Design Engineer, Civil Engineer, Senior Engineer or Technical Specialist within Robert Bird Group. This is a potential career pathway rather than a guaranteed outcome
