Summary
Under the supervision of the Library and Archives Director, to contribute to the development, maintenance and efficient operation of the library and archive, and to assist in the provision of an information service to members of the EFDSS, staff and external enquirers.
Key responsibilities
- Assisting and supervising readers in the use of library resources and equipment.
- Responding to personal, written, email and telephone enquiries and employing a range of resources to formulate appropriate responses.
- Document delivery
- The accession, cataloguing, classification and processing of a wide range of materials including books, serials, audio-visual, e-resources, rare items and ephemeral materials; cataloguing to international standards (currently AACR2 using MARC 21 records) and the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library’s classification scheme within the LMS Koha.
- Assisting with the development of the periodicals collection, including dealing with donations, duplicates, exchanges and subscriptions in consultation with the Library and Archives Director
- Indexing relevant content (songs, tunes, dances, etc.) within the collections to in-house standards for improved accessibility.
- Assisting with the VWML’s digitisation programmes covering a range of media including print, audio-visual, and archival material.
- Assisting with the organisation and maintenance of the VWML’s digital collections, and the implementation of the VWML’s digital preservation strategy.
- The day-to-day administration of the library, e.g. opening/closing, the handling of forms for commercial copies etc.
- General housekeeping duties, including filing, shelving, maintenance of stock and cash handling for copying and merchandise sales.
- Liaising with all internal departments and external organisations.
- Managing and supervising volunteers and placements, in consultation with the Library and Archives Director.
- Supporting the delivery of VWML events, e.g. lectures and conferences
- Delivering introductory talks to groups visiting the library.
- Contributing to future planning for library policies and procedures.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
- A recognised qualification in librarianship or information science
- At least 2 years’ experience working in libraries or a similar environment
- Knowledge and experience of MARC 21, RDA, and AACR2 cataloguing standards
- Database and Library Management System skills
- An understanding of the importance of accurate cataloguing and indexing
- Research skills
- Good inter-personal, oral and written communication skills, with the ability to draft own correspondence and deal with enquiries via multiple channels
- Familiarity with general office procedures, the operation of office equipment, e.g. photocopier, telephone, scanner, etc., and of software packages, e.g. Microsoft Office
- An enthusiasm for the folk arts
Desirable
- Ability to read musical notation
- Experience of managing digital assets, including creation, development, organisation, and maintenance
- Familiarity with the operation of audio and audio-visual equipment, e.g. CD, DVD, vinyl, cassette, VHS and reel-to-reel
- Experience of collection care and the handling of rare materials
- A knowledge of the folk arts, music and the social history of Britain
- Training in manual handling or a willingness to be trained to help carry books and boxes safely

Conditions of Employment
- Salary: £14,092.10 pro rata (£35,230.25 FTE)
- Hours: 14 hours per week, excluding lunch breaks. Usual working hours are 9.30am – 5.30pm. There is some flexibility over which days the post-holder wishes to work. The post holder will be expected to work one Saturday per month; time off in lieu is granted.
- Holidays: 10 days per annum (pro rata of 25 days for full-time entitlement) plus statutory public and bank holidays (pro-rata).
- Pension: Employer/employee contributory pension scheme.
- Probation: The post carries a six-month probationary period.
