About The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team in the Forest of Dean as a Library Assistant. We are looking for a dynamic individual with a sense of fun to help develop what we offer to our customers.

This will include helping them choose and issue books, maintaining the stock in the library, signposting to advice services, and providing children’s activities. We’re looking for someone who can work independently and with colleagues and volunteers, handle money, and think on their feet.
The position is 30.5 hours per week, working between Newent (NT) and Cinderford (CD) libraries on a 2-week rota. Example timetable:
- Week 1: Monday 1-7 (NT), Tuesday OFF, Wednesday 10-5 (CD), Thursday 10-5 (NT), Friday 9.30-7 (NT), and Saturday 10-2 (NT)
- Week 2: Monday OFF, Tuesday 10-5 (NT), Wednesday 10-5 (CD), Thursday 10-5 (NT), Friday 10-7 (NT) and Saturday 9.30-2 (NT)

- Excellent and proven customer service experience;
- Be a team player with strong communication and organizational skills;
- Have experience of working with or organizing events for children;
- Strong ICT skills;
- A knowledge of the services libraries offer and the role libraries play in the community.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
