At Albany Beck, you’ll be choosing to work with an organisation that’s passionate about your learning journey and committed to your professional and personal development.

Role Overview

Albany Beck is seeking an experienced Life Underwriter to join our growing Underwriting Practice, supporting leading insurers across the UK Life and Protection market. This is an opportunity to combine your underwriting expertise with the variety and exposure that comes from working within a specialist Financial Services consultancy. You will work with Albany Beck clients across a range of underwriting environments and initiatives, providing high-quality technical underwriting expertise while supporting improvements across customer journeys, operational processes and underwriting capability. Depending on the engagement, this could include supporting underwriting teams with complex case assessment, improving underwriting processes, supporting transformation initiatives, reviewing underwriting philosophies and guidelines, or helping organisations respond to periods of increased business demand. Alongside client delivery, you will become part of Albany Beck's developing Underwriting Practice, sharing knowledge and helping us continue to build a strong community of underwriting professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and make decisions on Life and Protection applications in line with agreed underwriting philosophy and authority levels.
  • Review medical, financial, occupational and lifestyle information to determine appropriate underwriting outcomes.
  • Manage complex or higher-risk cases requiring detailed underwriting assessment.
  • Apply appropriate terms, ratings, exclusions or other underwriting decisions where required.
  • Ensure underwriting decisions are consistent, evidence-based and appropriately documented.
  • Work with medical professionals, reinsurers and other specialists where additional assessment is required.
  • Maintain strong standards of customer service while balancing commercial and risk considerations.
  • Provide underwriting expertise across Albany Beck client engagements.
  • Support the review and improvement of underwriting processes, controls and customer journeys.
  • Identify opportunities to improve underwriting efficiency and decision quality.
  • Work collaboratively with Operations, Claims, Product, Risk, Technology and Transformation teams.
  • Provide underwriting input into business and technology change initiatives.
  • Support the implementation of new underwriting processes, systems and ways of working where required.
  • Share underwriting knowledge and best practice with client and Albany Beck teams.
  • Contribute to the continued development of Albany Beck's Underwriting Practice.
  • Share market knowledge, technical expertise and underwriting best practice across the wider team.
  • Support the development of underwriting standards and capability within the practice.
  • Build strong relationships with colleagues and clients across the Insurance market.
  • Help identify emerging trends and opportunities across Life and Protection underwriting.
  • Act as a positive ambassador for Albany Beck and our growing Insurance capability.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
