Job Title: Linguist
Location: Remote (Must be based in UK)
Remuneration: Up to £38.94 per hour
Contract Details: Temporary, ending on 31st March 2027
Responsibilities:
- Perform linguistic analyses on large datasets to identify trends and patterns.
- Conduct thorough error analysis of AI model outputs, focusing on frequent and severe error categories.
- Write and revise guidelines for human annotation and AI projects, including translation tasks.
- Engage in typological and sociolinguistic research across a diverse range of languages, emphasising their similarities and differences.
- Analyse linguistic aspects for Responsible AI, addressing toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and other cultural biases in multilingual environments.
- Conduct literature reviews on NLP-adjacent topics and summarise findings effectively.
- Evaluate the quality of vendor deliveries, identifying error patterns and providing actionable feedback.
- Offer guidance on various linguistic knowledge aspects, including typology, morpho-syntax, and phonetics.
- Collaborate with native speakers of various languages to enhance linguistic accuracy.
- Communicate results of linguistic analyses to engineers and research scientists clearly and concisely.

Skills:
- Strong written and spoken communication skills, particularly in business and research contexts.
- Near-native or native proficiency in a language from the Dravidian or Bantu families (Swahili is a plus) and near-native or native proficiency in English.
- Working knowledge of other languages, especially low-resource languages, is valued.
- Proficiency in Python and ability to query databases using SQL. Familiarity with additional coding languages for data analysis is beneficial.
- Proven ability to manage complex requests independently and perform under pressure.
- Strong organisational skills to prioritise, plan, and track work progress.
- Education or training in project management is an advantage.
- Self-motivation is essential.
- Working knowledge of international language-classification standards is a plus.
- PhD in Linguistics or a related field is required.
- Specialisation in corpus linguistics or experience with fieldwork is advantageous.
- Must possess a solid understanding of language typology, syntax, morphology, and sociolinguistics at an academic research level.
- Relevant experience, with a background in cross-functional collaboration.
- Experience working alongside machine learning, NLP, or software engineers, and contributing to research papers is preferred.
- Ideally, candidates should not have conflicts of interest in machine translation, ASR, TTS, or LLM research.
- A strong grasp of General Linguistics theory is essential for approaching 100 to 1,600 languages theoretically.
