Nature of Role
Development-focused software engineering role within an infrastructure context. This is a hands-on Python software development position, not an SRE, DevOps, platform engineering, or automation-focused role.
Role Overview
The team designs, develops, and maintains configuration management software for a large-scale private cloud platform, provisioning and managing bare-metal and virtual machines at significant scale.
As the organization progressively segregates its networks into distinct zones and enclaves, the existing software needs to be reworked and re-architected so that the platform can accurately model the new network boundaries while continuing to operate efficiently at scale. This is fundamentally a Linux and Python software engineering requirement. The successful engineer will have a strong track record of building and maintaining production-grade Python applications, supported by deep Unix/Linux knowledge, database experience, and an understanding of distributed systems. The client has specifically confirmed that this is not an SRE, DevOps, infrastructure automation, or platform engineering role.

Core Requirements
- Extensive enterprise-level experience developing and maintaining production Python software applications running on Unix/Linux systems.
- Strong Python software engineering skills, including application architecture, clean code, testing, maintainability, and performance optimization.
- Strong understanding of Unix/Linux systems and application environments.
- Hands-on experience working with databases, including application integration, data access, and performance considerations.
- Strong background designing and developing scalable, high-performance software systems.
- Experience troubleshooting and resolving issues within production environments.
- Practical experience with distributed architectures and large-scale systems.
- Strong understanding of software development best practices, system integration, automation, and performance engineering.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional engineering teams.

What Good Looks Like
- Building and maintaining substantial production Python applications, rather than primarily scripts or automation tools.
- Python development as a significant part of their software engineering career.
- Strong hands-on Linux/Unix development and troubleshooting experience.
- Meaningful experience working with databases within production applications.
- Experience developing for distributed, highly scalable, or high-performance environments.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving complex production software issues.
- At-scale infrastructure, configuration management, or private-cloud experience is advantageous, but should be secondary to their software engineering background.
