Senior Linux Test Development Engineer
High-Pay Contract | Fully Remote | Home Working Outside IR35 | Leading Semiconductor Client | International Engineering Team
We are looking for an experienced Linux Test Development Engineer to join an established international engineering team working with a leading semiconductor client on the validation and test development of advanced embedded Linux platforms.
This is a high-value, Outside IR35 contract opportunity for an engineer with strong Linux and embedded systems knowledge who enjoys developing robust automated tests, investigating complex system-level issues and working closely with both software and hardware.
You’ll play a key role in developing and maintaining the test environment used to validate embedded Linux platforms, working across the Linux kernel, BSP, bootloader, hardware and test automation stack.
The Role
As a Linux Test Development Engineer, you will:
- Develop and maintain automated Linux test solutions for embedded semiconductor platforms
- Write test and automation code using Python, Bash and C
- Develop and maintain test configurations and automation using YAML
- Create, execute and troubleshoot tests across Embedded Linux platforms
- Investigate failures at the system, kernel, driver and hardware interface levels
- Work with Linux BSPs and understand device trees, kernel configuration and U-Boot
- Integrate and test Linux, U-Boot and TF-A changes within Yocto-based BSPs
- Develop and maintain automated test pipelines using GitLab CI
- Analyse test failures and work closely with development engineers to identify root causes
- Use hardware knowledge and test equipment to investigate issues that cross the software/hardware boundary
- Contribute to improving test coverage, reliability and automation across the platform
- Collaborate with an experienced international engineering team working on leading-edge semiconductor technology

Essential Experience
We’re looking for strong experience in Linux test development and embedded systems validation, including:
- Test Development & Automation
- Commercial experience developing Linux test frameworks, test automation or system-level validation
- Strong Python and Bash skills
- Good knowledge of C
- Experience working with YAML
- Experience developing automated tests and analysing test failures
- Experience with GitLab CI or similar CI/CD environments
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
- Embedded Linux
- Solid understanding of Embedded Linux
- Experience working with Linux BSPs
- ARM64 experience is highly desirable
- Understanding of device tree customisation
- Understanding of Linux kernel configuration
- Experience debugging or modifying Linux drivers
- Experience with U-Boot configuration and customisation
- Experience integrating Linux/U-Boot/TF-A patches into Yocto BSPs
- Hardware & System-Level Debugging
- Ability to read and understand hardware schematics
- Experience troubleshooting issues across software and hardware
- Familiarity with laboratory test equipment such as:
- Oscilloscopes
- Logic analysers

Desirable Experience
Experience with any of the following would be highly advantageous:
- pytest
- Developing Linux device drivers from scratch
- Developing Yocto BSPs from scratch
- LAVA test automation
- Troubleshooting embedded video, audio and networking
- V4L2 experience in user space
- System-level validation of semiconductor/SoC platforms
- Hardware/software integration testing
- Developing automated regression test suites
