Livestock Controller at HM Prison Prescoed

Location: Coed-y-Paen, Pontypool, NP4 0TB

Contract: Temporary – 6 months

Working Hours: 37 hours per week

Working Pattern: Non-operational, non-rotational role with potential unsocial hours

Pay: £15.50 per hour PAYE | Up to £18.00 per hour via Self-Employed (SE)


We are currently seeking an experienced and responsible Livestock Controller to support the management of livestock within the prison farm environment at HM Prison Prescoed. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced livestock professional with a strong background in animal husbandry, livestock management and farm operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day care and welfare of livestock within the prison farm.
  • Oversee livestock feeding, breeding and general husbandry programmes.
  • Monitor animal health and implement appropriate livestock disease prevention measures.
  • Maintain high standards of animal welfare, hygiene and farm safety.
  • Supervise and support prisoner work parties involved in livestock and farm activities.
  • Provide guidance, training and development to prisoners undertaking agricultural duties.
  • Ensure all livestock records and relevant documentation are accurately maintained.
  • Comply with Health & Safety, COSHH and relevant animal welfare requirements.
  • Identify and report any concerns relating to animal health, welfare, safety or farm operations.
  • Work effectively within the security requirements of a custodial environment.

Essential Requirements:

Candidates must have:

  • Demonstrable experience in livestock management and animal husbandry.
  • Practical knowledge of livestock breeding programmes.
  • Understanding of animal nutrition and feeding requirements.
  • Experience with livestock disease prevention and animal health.
  • Good knowledge of Health & Safety and COSHH compliance.
  • Ability to supervise, communicate with and develop work parties effectively.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • The ability to work professionally within a secure prison environment.
  • Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
