About the role:
JCB Farms Limited is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Livestock Stockperson to join our team on the 4,000-acre Wootton Estate located on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border.
This is an exciting opportunity to work primarily within a high-welfare, organic outdoor pig enterprise whilst gaining experience across a diverse range of livestock and farming enterprises within a well-resourced and forward-thinking business.
The role will focus on our developing organic outdoor pig enterprise, comprising a 30-sow predominantly British Saddleback breeding herd supplying high-welfare, farrow-to-fork pork for Daylesford Organic. As part of the wider Wootton Estate, the enterprise is expected to maintain high standards of husbandry, presentation and animal welfare.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a genuine interest in livestock husbandry to play a key role within an innovative, progressive and well-resourced farming business. The successful applicant will be trusted to work independently for much of the time and, for the right candidate there will be a clear opportunity to take increasing responsibility for the day-to-day management and future development of the pig enterprise.
Whilst pigs will be the principal focus, the successful applicant will also support other livestock and farming enterprises across the estate as required. Duties will vary throughout the year depending on seasonal demands and business requirements.
The role would suit either an experienced pig stockperson seeking greater responsibility and variety, or a capable all-round livestock stockperson looking to develop within a progressive pig enterprise.
What does this role involve day to day?
- Daily care and welfare of breeding sows, boars, piglets and finishing pigs.
- Feeding, bedding and day-to-day stock management, including the regular bedding and strawing of outdoor breeding, weaning and farrowing arks.
- Breeding herd management, including boar management, service records, pregnancy diagnosis, sow condition monitoring and farrowing supervision.
- Animal health monitoring, administration of treatments and maintenance of accurate livestock, medicine and production records.
- Maintaining high standards of biosecurity, including cleaning and disinfecting livestock housing, equipment and vehicles, together with the preparation and cleaning of farrowing huts, feeders and drinkers.
- Operation and maintenance of electric fencing, water systems and paddock infrastructure, including strimming beneath electric fences, topping paddocks and maintaining wallows during dry periods.
- Loading, handling and movement of livestock, together with the collection and disposal of fallen stock in accordance with farm biosecurity and legal requirements.
- Assisting with other livestock enterprises as required, including beef cattle, sheep, deer and poultry.
- Supporting seasonal farm operations, including silaging, muck carting and other general farm duties as required.

This will be suited to you if…
Essential:
- A genuine interest in livestock and animal welfare.
- Reliable, hardworking and capable of working independently.
- Self-motivated and able to organise their own workload.
- Comfortable taking responsibility for the day-to-day management of livestock.
- Good observation and animal husbandry skills.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
- Previous pig husbandry experience.
- Experience working with other livestock species.
- Agricultural or livestock-related qualifications.
- Experience operating agricultural machinery.
Previous pig experience would be advantageous but is not essential, as training can be provided for the right candidate.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in all aspects of livestock management and understands that routine tasks such as cleaning feeders, washing huts and equipment, maintaining fences, strimming paddocks and maintaining biosecurity are just as important as breeding, farrowing and animal health.

Working Hours
The role is a permanent full-time position, based on a 42-hour working week and includes participation in a weekend livestock rota.
Typical working hours are Monday to Friday, with pig feeding and welfare checks undertaken on a shared weekend rota. Flexibility will be required to meet livestock, welfare and seasonal farming requirements.
