Local Authority School Governor

Help shape the future of a thriving primary school.
Llysfaen Primary School is seeking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic Local Authority Governor to join its active and supportive Governing Body. Governors work in partnership with the Headteacher, staff, parents, and the Local Authority to help ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, play, and laugh in line with the school's vision and values.
This is a rewarding voluntary role that enables individuals to make a meaningful contribution to education and the local community while helping to guide the strategic direction of a successful primary school.
Purpose of the Role
The Governing Body is responsible for the strategic leadership of the school and for holding school leaders to account for the educational standards, wellbeing, and outcomes achieved by pupils. Local Authority Governors bring their skills, experience, and community perspective to support effective decision-making and continuous school improvement.
Key Responsibilities
As a Local Authority Governor, you will:
- Contribute to the strategic leadership and direction of the school.
- Attend Full Governing Body meetings and participate constructively in discussions and decision-making.
- Serve on one or more Governing Body committees, such as: Finance & Staffing, Standards & Curriculum, or Health, Safety & Wellbeing.
- Monitor and evaluate school performance, standards, and progress against strategic objectives.
- Support the development and review of school policies and priorities.
- Participate in governor visits, training, and development opportunities.
- Support and challenge school leaders appropriately to ensure the best outcomes for pupils.
- Contribute to the preparation and publication of the Governors' Annual Report to Parents.
- Represent the Governing Body at school events and within the wider community.
- Undertake additional link governor responsibilities where appropriate, such as safeguarding, health and safety, curriculum areas, wellbeing, or governor training.
- Serve on discipline, complaints, or appeals panels as required.

The Governing Body recognises that governors are volunteers and seeks to ensure the role is manageable and rewarding.
Typical Commitments
- Approximately five Full Governing Body meetings per year, generally held on Wednesday evenings at 6.00pm.
- Up to six committee meetings per year, usually held at 5.00pm.
- Occasional school visits, training sessions, governing body events, and participation in panels where required.
While most meetings take place outside working hours, some governor duties are undertaken during the school day. Employers often support governors through paid time off for public duties.
Person Specification
We welcome applications from individuals who:
- Have an interest in education and improving outcomes for children.
- Are able to think strategically and work as part of a team.
- Can analyse information and contribute to discussions objectively.
- Are willing to ask questions, offer constructive challenge, and support school improvement.
- Can maintain confidentiality and act with integrity.
- Are prepared to attend meetings regularly and undertake training.

However, no previous governor experience is required, as training and support are provided.
Support and Training
New governors receive induction, guidance, and ongoing support. Opportunities are available to attend training and development events provided through Cardiff Council and the school, helping governors develop the knowledge and confidence required to fulfil the role effectively.
