General Medical Consultant (GIM)
We are seeking an experienced and motivated General Medical Consultant (GIM) to provide senior clinical leadership and support to our busy General Medical Ward on 12/14.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the assessment and management of patients admitted under general medicine, providing consultant-led care, supporting the multidisciplinary team, and ensuring high standards of patient safety and clinical governance.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Providing consultant-level clinical care to patients on the general medical ward.
- Leading ward rounds and overseeing the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients.
- Supporting and supervising resident doctors.
- Working closely with nursing, therapy and wider multidisciplinary teams.
- Contributing to safe and effective discharge planning and continuity of care.
- Participating in clinical governance, teaching and service improvement activities.
We Are Looking For a Consultant With:
- Appropriate specialist registration and relevant experience in General/Internal Medicine.
- Strong clinical and communication skills.
- A commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience in supervising and supporting resident doctors.

Main duties of the job
- Undertaking daily consultant-led ward rounds and reviewing patients admitted under General Medicine.
- Assessing, diagnosing and managing a broad range of acute and general medical conditions.
- Developing and reviewing individual patient management and treatment plans.
- Providing senior clinical decision-making and advice to junior doctors and the wider clinical team.
- Supervising, supporting and teaching resident doctors and other healthcare professionals.
- Working collaboratively with nursing, therapy, pharmacy and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensuring appropriate investigations are requested, reviewed and acted upon in a timely manner.
- Coordinating safe and effective discharge planning, including appropriate follow-up and communication with primary and community care services.
- Responding to clinical deterioration and providing appropriate senior medical input when required.
- Participating in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
- Contributing to the development and improvement of General Medical services.
- Maintaining accurate, timely and comprehensive clinical documentation.
- Communicating effectively with patients and their relatives/carers regarding diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care.
- Working in accordance with relevant professional standards, local policies and organisational procedures.

Job Description
Job responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, safe and effective consultant-led care to patients on the General Medical Ward.
- Take responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of patients under General Medicine.
- Lead consultant ward rounds and provide timely senior clinical decision-making.

- GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- Appropriate specialist registration or eligibility for specialist registration in General/Internal Medicine.
- Significant postgraduate experience in General Medicine, including experience managing acutely unwell medical inpatients.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and multidisciplinary colleagues.
Desirable
- Previous experience working as a Consultant within an acute or general medical ward setting.
- Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to General Medicine.
- Experience in acute medical admissions and management of deteriorating patients.
