A Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine provides senior clinical leadership within the Emergency Department (ED), delivering expert assessment, decision-making, and management of acutely unwell or injured patients while overseeing the performance, safety, and development of the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will;

  • Lead the delivery of high-quality, timely emergency care for patients presenting with undifferentiated and complex conditions.
  • Provide senior clinical decision-making to support safe flow through the ED and into inpatient or community pathways.

This is a fixed term Locum Consultant post for 6 months.

The Post Holder Will

  • Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development, and delivery of the Emergency Service for the Directorate.
  • Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the coordination of care for patients within Preston and Chorley Hospitals.
  • Participate in the Consultant on-call rota at the Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospitals with additional cover during colleague’s absence.
  • Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full time, and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
  • Develop close links with General Practitioners operating in the area.
  • Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Clinical duties will include all those duties normally expected of a Consultant in a similar sized Emergency Department in the United Kingdom.

The two Emergency Departments act as a single Emergency Service based on the two sites. The Royal Preston site is designated as the Major Trauma Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria with #team ED leading the multi-disciplinary trauma team.

Successful applicants will join an extensive team of Middle Grade doctors, Junior Doctors and ACPs providing comprehensive clinical support to the departments. We are now taking ED trainees at ST3 level for part of their Paediatric EM rotation. There is a dedicated, highly skilled nursing workforce including a team of Nurse Clinicians, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Physiotherapists providing extensive cover.

The ED consultant rota is annualised allowing flexibility and options for home-life balance. SPA activity will be written in the contract for simulation training as well as that required for revalidation. Any further SPA would be negotiable to enhance the candidate’s expertise and interests. There are numerous opportunities to be involved with education at undergraduate level and multi-disciplinary post graduate as well as research and audit.

The consultant body is encouraged to take the lead at Directorate level and we have a good reputation for our governance procedures. For those with children both hospital sites have a nursery.
