Main duties of the job
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic consultant to work in the Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). As part of our team, you will work collaboratively with colleagues, helping to deliver excellent services and ensuring the highest standards of patient care.
University Hospital Southampton is a major teaching centre for the University of Southampton offering opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and excellent facilities for research and clinical care. It is also the regional Major Trauma Centre with neurosurgery and cardiothoracics on site.

You will be working alongside experienced colleagues in both adult and paediatric ED, all with a wide range of interests including education, prehospital medicine, simulation, quality improvement, trauma, and critical care. Development of portfolio careers is encouraged, and individuals’ skills and interests nurtured.
You will be joining a strong team of Emergency Care Consultants, Associate Specialists and Consultant Paediatric Emergency Physicians.

The ED medical team is complemented by an experienced nursing team including a Consultant Nurse as well as a team of ACPs and ENPs.

Additional Information
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person specification
Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Completed registrar training programme in Emergency Medicine
- Wide range of experience in Emergency Medicine at Registrar and/or Consultant level
Desirable criteria
- CCT awarded or imminent within 6 months
- Completion of exit examination
- Experience in other health care systems
Aptitudes and Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
- Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
- Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
- Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
- Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
- Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary Emergency Department
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and leadership skills
