About The Role
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (MYTT) is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic consultant to join the Specialist Palliative Care Team, working predominantly supporting community services and Wakefield Hospice. This is a 9-month fixed-term locum post covering for maternity leave. The successful candidate will work with the Trust Specialist Palliative Care Team to provide services across the Wakefield and Pontefract community as well as the inpatient unit at Wakefield Hospice.
It is expected that the successful candidate will take a key role in providing community services and there is flexibility in the existing consultant team to enable pursuit of the successful candidate’s personal areas of interest. The post holder will work in a team of 7 consultants and 16 clinical nurse specialists who provide cross cover and support across hospital and community palliative medicine services. MYTT End of Life Care Services were rated as good in our last CQC visit. The multidisciplinary community team see approximately 1250 referrals per year. The post will involve working closely with a consultant colleague to provide consultant oversight of the Wakefield Hospice inpatient service which will be a maximum of 16 beds. Wakefield Hospice has approximately 250 admissions per annum.
The post holder will have the opportunity to work at a locality level as part of the collaborative end of life care partnership group improving co-ordination of care of patients in the last year of life and ensuring a whole system approach to care.
The teams are committed to education and service improvement with projects such as supporting the rollout of ReSPECT, supporting patients with non-malignant respiratory disease, supporting patients dying with stroke, specialist palliative care hospital at initiative, developing The Rosewood Centre, as well as leading the delivery of the multidisciplinary Motor Neurone Disease Service. The Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract provides lymphoedema services across the region.
The post holder will not routinely provide on-call services but would be expected to provide cover in unexpected circumstances at a frequency of a maximum of 1:8, which would be paid in addition to the 8 PAs. This is a second on-call service providing out-of-hours telephone advice across the Mid Yorkshire, Huddersfield, and Calderdale footprint.
Main Duties
Hospital
The main duties of the post will include:
- Support for the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team with both joint and independent review of patients.
- Support for Gold Standards Framework meetings in primary care where appropriate.
- Community team MDT weekly
- Administrative duties, for which appropriate office space and secretarial support is provided
- Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 8 PA timetable. Core SPA includes audit and governance. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.

Hospice
- Twice weekly ward rounds of hospice inpatients
- Weekly MDT
- Clinical supervision for FY2/IMT trainees at the hospice and specialist registrar on both sites if applicable and candidate has appropriate training. Training can be supported in post.
- Office accommodation with secretarial support is provided.
JOB CONTENT
This post holder will be based at Pinderfields Hospital (PGH). There will be mentorship provided from a senior member of the team within the department.
The post holder will attend the weekly hospice MDT.
The post holder will work alongside 6 consultant colleagues at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, 1 specialist registrar, 13 hospital and community clinical nurse specialists in palliative medicine, an end-of-life care facilitator, a fast-track facilitator, and 2 band 4 care coordinators.
At Wakefield Hospice the post holder will work with Dr. Anna Schuberth (Consultant in palliative medicine), an IMT, an FY2 trainee, a specialist registrar, and two staff grade doctors

Essential Person Specification Requirements
To meet the requirements of this role, applicants must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
- Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
- Medical Degree from a recognized medical school
- Higher Medical Qualification (e.g., MRCP) or show evidence of an equivalent qualification
- SCE in Palliative Medicine or equivalent
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Evidence of completion of a period of approved training in palliative medicine or within 6 months of completion of training
- Evidence of working in palliative medicine in hospice, hospital, and community settings
- Experience in education and training of healthcare professionals
- Demonstration of evidence-based practice
- Enthusiasm for maintaining a planned approach to CPD
- Evidence of understanding of clinical trials in palliative medicine.
