Job Description
The post is comprised of 9.11 programmed activities (PAs), of which 6.56 provide direct clinical care (DCC), 1 DCC (Patient Administration), 0.05 DCC for the on-call rota, and 1.5 are for supporting professional activities (SPAs).
The post is based at the Moorfields St George’s site. The proposed job plan is detailed below, which is subject to change in response to the demand of the service. This may increase to 10 PAs depending on clinical need, in the future.
The post also involves taking part in the joint MEH/Southwest London on-call rota, currently on a 1:22 weekly basis.
The St George’s Neuro-Ophthalmology sessions include outpatient face to face and virtual clinics, and MDT clinics. The St George’s Strabismus sessions include outpatient face to face clinics, and a bi-weekly theatre. The post-holder will work closely with local support services, nursing and administrative teams to provide a comprehensive outpatient and elective service to diverse populations within the Southwest London sector.
Responsibilities
- Delivery of direct clinical care within the services managed, including the treatment of routine and urgent cases and management of clinically complex or sight threatening conditions. This will include supporting with triage, assessment, and review of patients.
- On the day leadership and management of the department, including supervising junior medical staff, nurse practitioners and AHP colleagues, and supporting with operational management decisions to ensure the smooth running of the department and delivery against operational targets.
- Contribution to continuous service development and improvement, engagement in audits, and supporting robust clinical governance.
- Providing appropriate training and teaching to staff, supporting their professional development.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to provide specialist advice as required.
- Engage in research to stay up to date with current research and drive continuous innovation.
- Maintain continuous professional development in line with Royal College of Ophthalmologist requirements.

Applicants are required to hold FRCOphth, or equivalent, and be registered with the General Medical Council. Fellowship training within Neuro-Ophthalmology / Strabismus is essential and formal teaching experience would be advantageous.
