Job Overview
Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Vitreo-retinal surgery.
The post is based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, City Road and Moorfields at St George's Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to cover surgical operating lists as the lead surgeon.
You will be responsible for the care and management of patients seen in your allocated VR/ VRE clinics and operating sessions. You will be required to participate in the VRE on call rota alongside the other consultants.
The successful applicant will have completed FRCOphth / MRCOphth and must be registered with the GMC. Applicants need to evidence demonstrable training and experience in all aspects of Vitreo-retinal work.
The post will be for 12 months from October 2026.
Main duties of the job
Main Responsibilities
- Responsibility for the care of Vitreo-retinal patients across admitted and non admitted pathways.
- Participation in on call rota covering all aspects of Vitreo-retinal emergency work when needed.
- Management of elective theatre lists and outpatient clinics including face-to-face, telephone and virtual reviews.
- Supervision of junior medical staff in the VR/VRE clinics and theatre lists.
- Active participation in both formal and informal clinic teaching.
- Clinical research participation where relevant

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The VR service treats conditions at the back of the eye which often require surgical intervention. A large part of the service are the VR emergencies (VRE) seen in dedicated emergency clinics and operated on emergency theatre lists.
This post will be based across City Road and the Moorfields at St Georges satellite site.
Participation in the consultant on call rota will be expected to cover all aspects of VR emergency work and the post holder will be responsible for the care of Vitreo-retinal service patients of one of our consultant team.
In the year 2024/25, the Vitreoretinal department saw 2,910 elective admissions, 2,075 non-elective admissions and 26,598 outpatient attendances.
The department consists of 9 consultants. Junior medical staff currently includes two North Thames Specialist Registrars (Fellows) sub-specialising in Vitreo-retinal, five Vitreo-retinal Fellows and five Specialist Registrars. In addition, we have a Nurse consultant who plays an increasing role in the management of all Vitreo-retinal patients.
Person specification
Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
- Full GMC Registration (with a ‘License to Practise’).
- CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date).
- Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry.
Desirable criteria
- Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD).
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
- Fellowship Training in vitreoretinal surgery
- Relevant research methods training
- Extensive knowledge of vitreoretinal conditions
- Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education & the possible associated implications for Moorfields/UCL Institute of Ophthalmology
Desirable criteria
- Attended clinical leadership training
- Received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Teaching at postgraduate levels
- Extensive experience in the management of all of patients with conditions requiring vitreoretinal clinical/surgical knowledge.
- Experience of taking a leading role in a research group
- Evidence of promoting excellence in areas of research
- Extensive experience of working in a clinical and/or biomedical academic environment
- Understanding of the key NIHR funding streams for research
Desirable criteria
- Clinical leadership and management experience in developing and delivering new services
- Involvement in clinical leadership roles such a participation in QIPP projects & service improvement projects.
- Management innovation experience

Skills
Essential criteria
- High degree of clinical & surgical skills vitreoretinal surgery
- Track record of developing and submitting applications for research funding
- Track record of publications in peer-reviewed scientific & clinical journals.
- Ability to lead & co-ordinate clinical teams.
Desirable criteria
- Results by effectively managing relationships with sponsors/funding bodies/collaborators/other university/hospital research groups
- Ability to attract research funding
