Stroke Service Locum Consultant Opportunity
This post offers the opportunity for a committed and ambitious clinician to join the NHS Lanarkshire stroke service based at University Hospital Wishaw. If the candidate also has another area of interest, such as geriatric medicine or acute medicine, there is a precedent to have a hybrid role while still being actively involved in the delivery of hyperacute stroke care.
This is a fixed-term locum appointment for 6 months.
Acute Stroke Services
Acute stroke services are provided on all three acute Lanarkshire hospital sites. These include:
- Stroke thrombolysis
- Fast Track TIA clinics
- Acute assessment and rehabilitation for stroke in a dedicated ward
There are 24 integrated stroke beds within University Hospital Wishaw, including input from a stroke-specific multidisciplinary team. The regional vascular and Lanarkshire interventional radiology services are based on the Hairmyres’ site. A pan-Lanarkshire Stroke Tone Management Clinic runs weekly and involves two stroke consultants and two specialist stroke physiotherapists.
Stroke Service Overview
The Stroke Service has recently been awarded University Department Status and is currently recruiting to several multicenter and local research trials. There are three dedicated stroke clinical research practitioners.

Medicine for Older Adults Directorate
The Medicine for Older Adults directorate hosts Stroke services at UHW and is entering an exciting time with the establishment of an acute frailty unit. In addition, it runs:
- A hospital-at-home service
- A busy orthogeriatrics service for NHS Lanarkshire
The directorate would welcome applications from candidates who want to have input to these services in addition to the stroke service.
Job Details
The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time. If full-time, up to 2 EPAs may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.
Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non-DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well-developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an appraiser, etc. Applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to any of the above or other areas and wishing to commence on more than 1 PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.
