HAYDENSWAN Eyecare is an independent, family-owned practice based in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, dedicated to providing eyecare that is personal, unhurried, and focused on individual needs. The practice combines clinical expertise, advanced diagnostic technology, and carefully curated eyewear to support patients’ vision, confidence, wellbeing, and daily performance. Services range from comprehensive eye examinations and specialist dry eye care to children’s vision, myopia management, visual comfort assessments, and bespoke eyewear styling.

Role Description

The Locum Optometrist will provide comprehensive, person-centered eye examinations and follow-up care for patients in an independent practice setting. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Conducting routine and specialist assessments
  • Diagnosing and managing ocular conditions within the scope of practice
  • Collaborating on myopia management, dry eye care, visual comfort assessments, and pediatric eye care
  • Advising on clinical findings
  • Discussing treatment and management options
  • Working closely with the dispensing and practice team to deliver tailored eyewear solutions and a high standard of patient experience

The role involves maintaining accurate clinical records, supporting continuity of care, and contributing to a calm, detail-focused environment that reflects the practice’s values. This is a part-time, on-site role located in Haywards Heath.

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the General Optical Council (GOC) and eligibility to practice as an Optometrist in the UK; relevant professional indemnity cover.
  • Strong clinical skills in comprehensive eye examinations, refraction, contact lens fitting, and detection and management of common ocular conditions.
  • Experience or interest in specialist areas such as dry eye management, myopia management, children’s vision, and visual comfort assessments.
  • Ability to use modern diagnostic equipment and practice management systems confidently and accurately.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-centered approach and the ability to build trust with individuals and families.
  • Attention to detail in clinical record-keeping, adherence to professional and regulatory standards, and commitment to evidence-based practice.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to work closely with the wider practice team to deliver consistent, high-quality service.
  • Flexibility and reliability in a locum capacity, with the ability to adapt to practice protocols and contribute positively to the practice culture.
  • Previous experience in independent practice or premium eyecare environments is advantageous.
