We're working with a pioneering UK deep-tech company building programmable silicon photonic compute, performing operations directly within the data path to support AI, cybersecurity, and scientific workloads.
You'll own the timing-critical custom logic at the heart of a high-speed, compute-enabled PHY that links photonic, analogue, and digital subsystems.
What we're after:
- β Custom digital or high-speed mixed-signal IC design, with multiple tapeouts
- β Strong transistor-level CMOS: datapaths, clocking, timing, and SI trade-offs
- β Hands-on Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre (or similar)
- β Taking logic from spec through layout sign-off to silicon debug
- β Advanced nodes (7nm/12nm, FinFET) a real plus
- β Python, Tcl, or SKILL automation a bonus

Iβm in my final year doing Economics and I donβt know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer β it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) donβt need a masters. Letβs look at the ones youβd be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet β that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This isn't block-level work on someone else's architecture. You'll define the microarchitecture, design SerDes datapaths, flip-flops, and memory banks, and guide layout through to tapeout and first-silicon bring-up.
You'll work closely with the Director of Photonics and a small, sharp team of analogue, photonic, and physical design engineers, making trade-offs that directly shape a genuinely new kind of compute.
